I like how this worked for the Panthers this past weekend.
Anyway, I doubt Brad Johnson will be phased by Jessica Simpson.
K State,
Every team has capologists. Just because they get under the cap every year doesn't mean they do the best job of managing it. They are paying the price for bringing in high priced free agents so much of the time in previous years. Archeleta (sp?) signed a pricey deal and he could not even get on the field for them. As they always do, the Redskins will restructure current contracts with bonuses to get under the cap next year. Dallas used to have to play that game in the early 2000s when they had Aikman, Smith, Woodson, Deon, and others.
Teams probably do overvalue draft picks to some extent, but you've got to be effective at bringing in young, drafted players to be the core of your team and complement them with key free agents. Dallas had not been as successful in the Bill Parcells era at bringing in quality high draft picks as the (east coast) media would have you believe. A few too many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd draft choices have not made it. However, they still have a core of good young players in place now (playing on rookie contracts) and have a great opportunity to add to that core in the next draft with an additional 1st round draft pick.
Little Danny Snyder's team has not really built through the draft that much (Cooley, Taylor, Landry, the cornerback from Auburn, and Campbell are their key guys from the draft). The vast majority of the Redskin front seven on defense is made up of guys on the other side of 30 years of age. Just look at Randall Godfrey (33 or 34 years old) out there running around for them last week. By the time the offense comes around with the young QB, the defense will be in need of a complete overhaul.
I may be wrong, but I am not seeing a lot of non-premium (4-7 round) draft picks making contributions in Washington. This is where Dallas has done a pretty good job over the last few years. Players like Chris Canty, Jay Ratliff, Marion Barber III, Patrick Crayton, even Nick Folk the new kicker were lower round draft choices who have done very well. Not to mention free agent finds like Tony Romo and Matt McBriar. Dallas did not have to use any high draft picks to acquire their veteran receivers Terrell Owens or Terry Glenn.
IMO Dallas has a real opportunity to be consistently good for the next 4-5 years. I don't envision that for Washington.

The question is: how are they paying the price? the only free agent they lost (and wanted to keep) last year was Dockery. they let him go not because they couldn't fit him under the cap, but because he was asking for twice his worth. in the end, Washington actually upgraded at that position with Kendall.
Despite some key injuries, they've shown that their depth is better than most in the media will claim.
Kendall is 34 years old while Dockery is 27. Stopgap at best. That is just another spot Washington will have to fill very soon. With their defense (more than their offense) there will be too many holes to fill at once.
It's not a stopgap when the guy is a) outperforming the player he replaced and b) making significantly less.
It's not like he replaced Larry Allen. The Redskins weren't going to give a $16 million signing bonus to an inconsistent guard with a propensity to miss blocks at key times.
Is Kendall still going to be the answer at left guard in 3 years? Probably not. But in the modern NFL, that could be said for half the left guards in the league.
And the Redskin defense is relatively young actually, so I don't know why you think a bunch of holes are going to open up there. 7 of their starters are 28 or younger. 5 are 25 or younger. Of the geezers - they already have young guys ready to step in for Fletcher (who isn't slowing down), Griffin, and Springs (who isn't even a starter when everybody is healthy). There's no long term back-up in the wings behind Washington (unless Blades shifts there) or Daniels, but every team in the league has a couple of situations like that.

Dallas is not over the cap next year or showing an '08 cap figure similar to Washington. I keep reading $18MM under the cap next year from a number of different sources. That may have changed with some recent signings, but they should have some flexibility.
An interesting question will be if the Redskins fall in love with their backup QB now based on a couple of successful outings. Collins is an unrestricted FA, but he is 36 years old. Paying starters money to three players, Campbell, Brunell, and Collins would not seem to make much sense. They'll have to get rid of one of them (Brunell?).
I think they'd love to have Collins back as the #2 next year.
I would doubt they would pay starters' money for him. But who else would? Can any team justify giving a huge contract to a guy who will be 37 next year based on a 4 week (hopefully longer) stretch? I don't think that Daniel Snyder will have to compete against starter money to re-sign him.
They should be able to finally dump Brunell this offseason. Probably add a young guy with a high ceiling at the end of the draft.
I'm not saying that Washington is in as good of shape with the salary cap next year as the Cowboys or most other teams. But they are not in either. They probably can't go on a spending spree - but Washington will keep most of their own free agents and go out and nab a couple of guys from other teams that they really like.
A lot can happen, but barring anything drastic, Washington is set at most spots heading into next year. DE, a WR with size, and some corner depth is really all they'll be lacking. Anything else would likely be to upgrade over their current talent.
cap is a myth.
snyder's dollars can free up any amount of cap space with renegotiations.
that said, a GM would be a wonderful thing to have in DC.
