The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment in Manhattan inhabited by the actress Mary-Kate Olsen, according to the New York City police. Signs pointed to a suicide, police sources said. Mr. Ledger was 28.
At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building, at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of the bedroom Mr. Ledger was in. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger naked and unconscious on a bed, with pills scattered around his body. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities.
The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said they believed Ms. Olsen, 21, was in California and said it was not clear how long or why Mr. Ledger had been in her apartment...

They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities.
The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said they believed Ms. Olsen, 21, was in California and said it was not clear how long or why Mr. Ledger had been in her apartment.
Mr. Ledger, a native of Perth, Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain” (2005). The film, based on a short story by Annie Proulx about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”
Mr. Ledger met the actress Mic e Williams while filming ‘’Brokeback Mountain.” The two actors fell into a romance and moved to Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, where their comings and goings were widely noted by paparazzi. They had a daughter, Matilda Rose, who was born on Oct. 28, 2005. The couple separated last year.
In an interview in London for an article published in November, Mr. Ledger told The New York Times, ‘’I feel like I’m wasting time if I repeat myself.” He said in the interview that he was not proud of his latest role, in Todd Haynes’s “I’m Not There,” in which Mr. Ledger was one of a half-dozen actors depicting the musician Bob Dylan. ‘’I feel the same way about everything I do. The day I say, ‘It’s good’ is the day I should start doing something else,” said in the interview.
Calls by The Times to Mara Buxbaum, a publicist for Mr. Ledger, and Steve Alexander, the actor’s agent, were not immediately returned this afternoon.

pretty crazy ...
i'm one of the few who liked Knights Tale. R.I.P.
If I played that part in Brokeback Mountain I would probably kill myself too...
Wasted talent.
A sad day.
I just don't understand the drugs though.
I'm with ya on that. One of my favorite movies.
I don't see why the dude would kill himself...he's got a 2 year old daughter and his career is on the upswing.
It could be true...because it's hard to unintentionally OD on any kind of prescription meds...but I just don't see any reason why.
TMZ.com has all the latest.
Sad...
We rarely do.I just don't see any reason why.
I don't really agree with that....at least as it pertains to celebrities...usually the ones that do it have some issues that are either well known, or come out at the time.
I don't think it was a suicide.
You don't kill yourself before the premiere of the new Batman movie when you are playing the Joker...no one does that. You at least wait to see yourself playing the Joker...I mean think about it. Playing the Joker trumps any other issues you might have. Wouldn't it for you?
What does Mary Kate Olsen have to say about this? That's what I want to know.
"I'd like a sammich."
Well there's still time.
But what I'm saying is we rarely understand why people choose to take their lives, particularly people who have the supers om that we regular folks crave. Kurt Cobain was similar... I can't say I was as surprised by his suicide as this one, but there still wasn't any apparent reason for him to do it.
The mind is more powerful than any hollywood role could possibly be.
TMZ said it wasn't her apartment.

I'm not buying that it's suicide.
Didn't see that one that coming
yeahbut...he was playing the Joker. I'm telling you...no one kills themselves when they are about to play the Joker...it just doesn't happen.
Personally...I wouldn't want to be a modern celebrity...it looks like it sucks to me and they all look miserable...plus most of their movies suck.
It's really not hard to see why the ones that do it do it...they have a hole in them they seek to fill with material trappings...once they achieve the so called pinnacle of that success and the hole remains...they give up.
I don't see a whole lot of similarities between this guy and Kurt Cobain...I mean, this guy didn't suck.Kurt Cobain was similar... I can't say I was as surprised by his suicide as this one, but there still wasn't any apparent reason for him to do it.
