No. There are several films in my collection that I know for a fact are degrading to women, but they had enough else going for them that I was at least entertained. Match Point isn't one of those films.
Do you like the Godfather movies?

    But, how could you?

The Senator kills a woman and he get's away with it.

Sonny constantly treats his women like chattel.

Michael beats up on his wife and takes her children from her. He makes a servant out of his sister. Apolonia is just a background character.

For someone who has a strong feminist point of view, these are hard movies for you to defend.

You're arguing points that I never even tried to make. And doing a piss poor job of it, to boot.

Firstly, the moments you mentioned are minor plot points and not the thrust of the entire film/trilogy.

Secondly, as a woman of Sicilian descent, I can feel very secure in saying that the misogyny inherent in that culture is a pretty important part of establishing the make-up of the individual characters and their community as a whole. The Godfather is not a film in which an otherwise mild mannered tennis pro sees murder as the only way to clean up a mess he made, it's a film depicting a family/lifestyle in which violence is a very real and frequent part of their daily lives.

Lastly, this "strong feminist point of view" is something created entirely out of your imagination. I'm pretty much as far from a militant feminist as one could be. As I've already said, I can overlook certain instances of degradation and objectification for the sake of entertainment. The Godfather, and its sequel, is a film that had enough going for it outside of its treatment of women that I was still entertained and engaged by what what happening on the screen. Match Point, on the other hand, was not.

    Oh, I get it.

A little bit of misogyny is okay. And, it's okay if it's part of the culture. But, it's bad if a tennis player kills a woman.

    Got it.

    Not even close.

But, I suspect you know that. And I've already been dragged further into this pointless argument than I ever wanted to go.

    I think you're right.

One can never win an argument vs. a feminist.
