Jess...you are into wine and craft-type stuff right?
LOL the last time i looked at my phone was in te day saturday. Oops.
Jess...you are into wine and craft-type stuff right?
Thanks! And yeah, Manny's tropical ass is going to freeze - but I'm going to make him go out in the snow with me anyways![]()
And it sounds like you'll be doing the typical late August move in. Just keep in mid that everyone else is also moving in at that same time. Reserve your moving trucks early. Finalize your living arrangements early. Don't get caught up in the mess of campus move-in unprepared. It's from August 20th to about Sept 5th ...depending on the where the first day of class falls. Everyone is trying to get cable/internet/phone service installed at the exact same time. Same goes for any furniture/appliances deliveries you try to arrange.
Comcast is the only real cable provider here. Of course you have the DirectTv or Satellite options too....if the apartment complex allows it.
I also use Comcast for my internet vs other options.
Heat...something you probably don't worry about in Texas! Usually better off w/ Electric heat vs Gas as far as $$ goes. My winter electric bill usually goes to about $110-$130. $60-$80 the rest of the year....but I tend to be pretty bad about turning things off...so my bill may be a bit higher than it should.
Most places offer move-in specials. Water is usually paid for. Some even have free basic cable at times. Most places have on-site laundry. You can get washer/dryers in your apt ... but rent increase naturally. There is a decent amount of laundromats though if needed.
Yes - I've heard Ann Arbor is a good place for the arts, any tips?
You can do a Comcast bundle for internet, phone and cable like you can with TW.
I'm telling you the fall colors can be very romantic.
And the cold weather has its snuggling advantages too.
I don't know about Ann Arbor but you have a built in friend up here in my wife. She is the same way. Loves her wine and loves her crafts. We are just an hour away.
The Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair is one the largest fairs in the country. People travel all over for it. Quality museums and galleries for such a small area. Festivals galore in the summer also. Tons of concerts in the many University theatres. You'll dig it.
I have a bunch of friends that have done the big cross country moves for school, and they have all mentioned reserving things as early as humanly possible. I'd love to find an apartment with heat included for the first year (Manny might need it, haha).
I might end up selling a lot of my stuff - the program I'm going for doesn't usually take more than 2 years (depending on how many extra classes I'll have to take for my specialty).
Haven't decided on a specialization yet because the MLIS has only recently been recommended for a position as an art librarian (MFA in Art History used to be enough, but the field is just getting way too compe ive), so there's still some debate as to the best way to go about picking a specialty. I'm still several years from having to choose, though, because I'm working on my BA now and will probably go for my MFA before the MLIS.
... every time I write that out I'm reminded of how much ing school I have ahead of me.![]()
I've lived in Minnesota..
it snows there..
lol..
I loved it... as far as the scenery and stuff..
but you'll definately miss Texas... if not atleast the people..
We stored our and left.. came back after 7 months.. if you're planning on staying there forevers.. start sellin
Nice. University of Michigan has a gifvkcingnormous campus. But it's pretty cool.
Regarding if you should sell your stuff or move it, it probably depends how long you guys plan to live there. If you are coming back in a few years, then I'd say either get some southside storage place to hook you up for some long-term rental or just take a U-haul up there. If you plan on staying there after finishing school, I'd probably just sell everything and start fresh up there.
Manny, you got that thin tropical blood. Your azz is going to die during the first winter. But if you survive that one, you should adjust after the first year.
Oh and you should open a Mexican restaurant. Even Taco Cabana quality is unheard of up there.
I would recommend searching for a dual degree program - I almost applied at Indiana because they had a combined MA in History and MLIS program where you could finish it all in 63 hours (saving like 17 hours or so) - U of Hawaii had the same deal (Manny is probably wishing that I had applied there).
Looks like Indiana's MLIS program does offer a dual degree with an MA in Art History and a specialization in art librarianship - http://www.slis.indiana.edu/degrees/joint/
And, here is the complete list of ALA accredited programs (there aren't too many all things considered) - http://ala.org/ala/accreditation/lis...lphaaccred.cfm
very true.
There is a little place up here run by a guy from SA...does tons of business.
Yeah, it is definitely spread out quite a bit.
For furniture, the major place up here is ArtVan Furniture. Mid range quality and price is their mainstay. But they also have some nice higher end stuff aswell as a 'clearance center' which caters to what I'd call 'starter' furniture. Basic and common apartment furniture. Group packages (5 piece living room set, etc.). Some ready to assemble type stuff also.
There is also an Ikea which recently moved in the are about 45 minutes away. It's probably the most popular place for students.
congrats to you both and blessings on all your endeavors!
You can also buy Manny's Tortillas at Meijer. Our version of HEB.
Thanks for the links! I knew that the list of accredited programs was pretty small, but hadn't really gone over it yet.
And I probably will end up doing the dual degree because it's so practical, especially in a program that's specifically aimed at my chosen career. There's a stubborn little piece of me that wants the MFA from Savannah College of Art & Design just because I love Savannah and I love their program(s), but I'm pretty sure that stubborn little piece of me will eventually wake up and realize that it's not worth staying in school until I'm 36 years old.
GRRR...You have to say it right. Up here, we say "Meijers".![]()
One tip for when you go up there, don't eat the Filipino food. I'm not sure if you've ever eaten Filipino food to begin with but if you have the urge, don't do it up there. Trust me.
lots of murders and rapists in Michigan, you should get a gun. the white militant groups mostly stay to the north in Michigan. I predict you will move again soon. Most new people cannot believe what they find in Michigan. You have to be born and brainwashed there to want to live there.
Once the season starts this will move to number one on your list. You can't survive without it if you're an out-of-state fan.
No problem, I'd be glad to know that someone else is benefiting from all of the time I put into researching this. Despite working at a library, no one there could really tell me about any of the programs outside of Texas (most of the librarians have their masters from UNT online), so when I wasn't stuck doing holdings edits I was looking at this stuff. The whole admissions process is a PITA, just a forewarning. No one told me how crazy it would be (despite contacting my profs for recommendations the second week of December and emailing them once or twice a week since then, two of my three recs were late getting in - so, make friends with the admissions coordinators because some of them will work with you on stuff like that that's out of your control).
Corcoran School recruited me after high school, and I really thought about going there for the experience, but realized that getting a BA in something slightly more practical first would be far more prudent. I hear Savannah is an awesome city, and remember that you can always go back and do classes there later if you want (or, alternatively, a lot of schools offer graduate certificate programs for people that already have their masters so they can further specialize - I don't know if Savannah offers this, but it might be worth looking at).
U of Long Island has a program with NYU where you can get the former's MLIS and the latter's MA or MFA - http://www.cwpost.liu.edu/cwis/cwp/c...l_masters.html
Ugh. Just STFU.
