Parker said on his radio show yesterday that Spurs have just signed an Aussie. If this deal hit a snag, it was today but I highly doubt it's the case. My guess is that Baynes will be oficially signed tomorrow.

Spurs financial best financial interest is to wait until tomorrow and it shouldn't even hurt Baynes. Let's say that Baynes and Spurs have agreed to a $400K salary for the rest of the season.
If Spurs sign him today, Baynes will get $400K and his contract will count for $432K against the luxury tax.
If Spurs sign him tomorrow, Baynes will get $400K and his contract will count for $427K against the luxury tax.
By waiting, Spurs save $5K by day and Baynes will be paid the same money.

Can this guy contribute right away? And more importantly, will Pop play him?

Its interesting to note. When/Should Baynes step on the court in an Spurs jersey 2 records would have been set.

    1. There would have been more Australians play for San Antonio than any other NBA team (Previous record set by the Bulls, Longley, Anstey and Schenscher, then equaled by the Spurs, Gaze, Heal and Mills)
    2. Never before has any NBA team had 2 Australians on its active roster. (Assuming something mysterious doesnt happen to Patty Mills)

Probably doesnt mean much to you blokes but as an Aussie and lifetime Spurs fan I'm proud of that.

hopefully Mills doesn't disappear from some Last Wave/mystical Aborigine .

it's kind of crazy how many Aussie fans are on here tbh. i'm cool with it, as long as Aussies don't start pushing for their countrymen over the team's interests. Boomersgold is pretty bad about this tbh.

Actually, even though I'm biased for Patty Mills, I've always cheered on the team even when Patty doesn't get playing time. In fact, besides asking how "Patty's done so far", if he's afforded playing time on the court, 95% of my posts are me cheering on the other players on the team. Check my history....

Also, I'm a fan of Patty because I was a huge fan of him when he played for Saint Mary's, not because Patty's an Australian. I'm not biased for Australians. I've mentioned many times on here that I'm not particularly a fan of Baynes, and had never heard of him until his appearance on the national squad. I take being accused of being biased for "my countrymen" as being an insult, tbh. It pisses me off.

no, and I don't plan on it. i got better things to do, like sleep. I just know you mention Patty a lot over guys who are just as deserving like Nando, CoJo etc...You aren't as bad as playblair, i'll give you that. I'm actually a fan of Mills being on the team fwiw.

Just a few snippets of the things I post on this forum (to show that I'm not THAT bad of a poster)

Re: Quick Grades: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19
Bonner flat out balled tonight. Does his performance warrant bringing him back in the regular rotation?
Re: Game Thread: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19 @ 6 PM CST
    Tony Parker for MVP!
Re: Game Thread: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19 @ 6 PM CST
    Parker to Tiago!
Re: Game Thread: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19 @ 6 PM CST
    Gary Neal 2 from 9.
Re: Game Thread: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19 @ 6 PM CST
Shooting a three off a pass isn't a "hero possession". He's not playing well to start the second half though.
Re: Game Thread: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19 @ 6 PM CST
Bonner's destroying the Hawks by himself.
Re: Game Thread: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19 @ 6 PM CST
Matt Bonner showing that his regular seasons statistics of shooting above 50% from the three point line is no lie.
Re: Game Thread: Spurs @ Hawks - Jan. 19 @ 6 PM CST
    What a pass by TP!
Re: Game Thread: Spurs vs. Warriors - Jan. 18
Jackson with the Pete Maravich ball fake!
Re: Game Thread: Spurs vs. Warriors - Jan. 18
Has Jackson been having lessons from Hakeem?
Re: Game Thread: Spurs vs. Warriors - Jan. 18
Holy Crap! Tiago with the monster rebound!

Patty's my favorite player, and like everyone's favorite players, we cheer for them a little more than we do the other players.

^it's all good. I don't really care where our players come from, as long as they represent the team and community well. i think Mills is a good value, and it's cool he's an Aborigine as well.

nah dude, you bang the Patty drum way to much, and not rating Baynes seems to be more of a "see im not biased towards Aussies" diversion tactic, anyone who knows ball down here knows he is a legitimate prospect because of the tools he has, and how hard he has worked and measurably improved on the areas he was low on a few years ago.

FWIW I think Patty has potential to end up a starter somewhere one day, The tools he has got, Speed and shooting when on are at the elite level of the league, CP3 himself says Patty is the fastest guy with the ball in his hands in the NBA, and when he gets hot that speed and his eye make him very tough for opposing teams let alone guards.

Baynes I am keen to see how what he has compares to other guys in the NBA. But if you dont rate him, you really have not seem him properly.

We'll need to keep an eye on the sudden rise in population of Aussies in San Antonio, lately. When you hear the term "breeding like rabbits", you automatically think of Australia...plus Aussies always go around saying "mate" to people. Coincidence? I think not.

I never said that I didn't think that Baynes can be a legitimate prospect for the Spurs. He's an obvious upgrade over Blair and Bonner, but I'm still not a fan of his, like El Nono isn't a fan of Parkers' (even though El Nono respects his talents). I was very impressed with the way that he performed at the Olympics though, but I'm not sure how he'll fair in the NBA.

I don't think that you can talk, buddy. Almost all of your 125 posts have to do with Patty Mills or Baynes. I've got no problems with being biased with our fellow countrymen, but I'm not someone who blindly becomes a fan of someone just because they came from the same country that I live in.

btw, didn't you say that you work at the AIS? Have you worked with Baynes before, and if so, what role do you see him playing in the NBA?

    you sure?

Actually I post on here because my brother-in-law, a Texas native, who posts here said "hey, you should come and post on this site" you know a lot about Aussie basketball and TDMVPDPOY is a poor representation. Actually since I have been coming here I think most of the Aussies who post here are really good.

I talk lot about those guys, because I know a lot about those guys, and would like to share that with people who might be interested.

I worked in sports science at the AIS through a period that had Baynes and Patty go through. Baynes has come a long way since then, Patty we all knew would make it, cards just had to fall his way, Baynes showed glimpses but needed to do a lot of work as he came from a long way back having picked up the sport so late, his progression has been nothing short of extraordinary he is an enormous compe or, and he gets angry ina good way and thats when he plays his best ball. I think he will be a solid back up 4/5 in the NBA and see rotation minutes. I am really looking forward to see him get stuck into Demarcus Cousins....

Matthew Dellavedova now there is a kid who just needs to get a shot, he could be pick 60 and will work his way onto a roster and eventually start.

    He could eventually replace Neal.

At this rate we could start most of the Australian NT at the end of the 2014 regular season.
