Technically, yes. They'd have to cut him, though.
Read nothing of the sort.
Well our main guys are still intact, looks like a whole new bench though this coming year
Gasol/guy from the Bulls
Aldridge/Gay
Leonard/Anderson
Green/Paul
Mills/Forbes/Murray
It came from Jabari so I would take it with a ton of salt:
After talks on a new contract stalled, a sign-and-trade with the Phoenix Suns was presented. The deal featured the Spurs getting center Tyson Chandler in exchange for Simmons, but at the last minute, the Spurs backed out of the trade, not wanting to take on the remaining two years and roughly $26 million on Chandler’s deal.
According to league sources, Simmons’ representatives then spoke with Spurs officials late Wednesday in Las Vegas, where it was requested he become an unrestricted free agent. The team granted the request Thursday morning, the last day teams can pull qualifying offers.

Dodged a bullet there.
chandler would have had a 13.6 million hit on the cap next summer.
Now that certainly is interesting, though not unexpected. The Chandler trade would be fine (and can still be done), but I guess the team wants another shot at free agency next summer.
I kind of like the idea. But would also love to havING one more rim protector.
Yep, not to mention injury prone and production starting to fall of a cliff
Thanks goodness they back out. WOuld of been an excellent salary dump by the Suns tbh. Would only do that if a young player was involved.

I wish you the best for the years to come.
Boris
You know Kawhitstorm or whatever his name is was flicking the bean to that news about Chandler. That dude loved Chandler.
Spurs free agency has to be the worst In The league this season.
So Bulls or Knicks did better than the Spurs? Okay.
2/3 of the way there!
Sad that the brilliant front office didn't even lose to an overpriced offer sheet, they just cut him loose.
I mean, they cut him loose because they couldn't agree on a deal.. they tried. So it's essentially the same thing. Simmons' camp just wants more then we're willing to offer, and I'm okay with that. This is likely Simmons' last chance at a big contract and he should go where the money is. Sucks to lose him, but it is what it is. I wish him the best next season, and hopefully Paul can bring something similar to the table.
Someone bump this nicca's when the Spurs are 2nd in the West 60gms in!
This has turned out to be a pretty funny offseason.
I melted down for my own share just bc.... well I didn't want 12:01 Patty, 4 year contract.
Other than that![]()
This is pretty much a you Simmons, if he had trouble finding offers he likes considering other teams needed to make an offer that the spurs won't match, now his leverage to negotiate with other teams is even worse.
There will be no deal he signs that they should not have matched on. Even if Philly gives him a max, it would have been Arenas Max.
In a summer where they should have gotten bigger and more athletic 1-3 and smallball 4 they have regressed in a big way. In a staggering way.
What should have they done? Seems you've got all the answers
When you start trying to argue that Simmons should be making $25-plus Million for the third and fourth years of his deal, you know you've sort of spiraled out of control.
