Incomprehensible pain and loss at a high school, yet again, and

it’s children who are the leading voices for action.

Meanwhile, our president uses the tragedy to attack the investigation of a foreign adversary’s interference in our democracy.

    Shameful.

    Yeah.

Because the police and FBI quite obviously want every household they visit to have a gun trained on them.
Family arguements are a lot more fun for the cops when multiple guns are involved in a family argument they have been called to. I'm sure they enjoy the challenge.
No background check is going to trigger if the agencies don't do their jobs and tag people. From the Air Force? failing to flag the Texas church shooter to the FBI/social/local services and this school shooter - the fault lies in follow-up and communication/data entry.

It is a level of ignorant stupidity that only exsists in the insane asylum known as the USA, that the people, who would be catagorised as legally re ed in the rest of the civilised world who can’t process between their desire for an automatic weapon over protecting the lives of children.

That some serious low functioning cognition.

Well clearly Japan should just abandon all gun laws if a few bad guys still find a way to get them.
Makes sense to me. Also they need God in schools.
Maybe if the USA abandoned due process, nuked a couple of its largest cities and had another country occupy it for 50+ years, we'd be better off.

I'd rather have Nikolas Cruz attacking schools with hammers and abortions than an AR-15 tbh.

I'd much rather have Nikolas Cruz shooting up schools with a knife instead of an AR-15.

This point is easily defeated. Arm our military and police with knives instead of guns.

The problem isn't the gun or the knife (or the bomb). It's the person. If we cannot find a way to corral the lunatics, we have to at least stop them from gaining the ability to impose their will on the rest of society, at a whim. They should not have a knife or a gun (or a bomb). This requires on some personal freedoms being infringed upon. Underwater where sharks live, divers use cages which restrict their freedom of movement but, more importantly, protect them from the sharks.

I think schools should be harder to get into than the gates at the airport. Sure, a plane can be turned into a weapon, but what's the difference between crashing a plane and killing hundreds or walking into a dozen schools across the country and killing hundreds? By now we should all be well aware of the fact that shooters prefer high body counts, which means they prefer to not be shot at while going on their rampage (otherwise they'd attack police stations and military bases instead of schools, churches and concerts).

So lock these things down. You cannot get onto the wealthy communities without clearing the security gate. However you can walk into a school where defenseless children are packed like sardines with anything you can carry. Seems a bit backwards.

Locking down the access to schools and places considered to be "gun free zones" would require very little legislation, compared to gun control bills that will never make it out of committee.

Or just keep having candlelight vigils.

Disarming a society will only enable the lunatic. Posters here want a gun ban, specifically an AR-15 ban. This only sets a precedent for more bans, and a slippery slope to a complete gun grab. You want to make it harder for the lunatic to get an AR-15? That's fine - I agree with you. If the coach or a teacher had a gun, Cruz would probably be the one getting buried instead of those children. Gun free zones wasn't something our forefathers envisioned.

So a teacher (or a coach) isn't only supposed to carry a gun they need to carry an AR-15 for it to be a fair fight? Is that what you're proposing?

Democrats aren't brave enough to push for an outright ban. I think you should be required to show need for any semi-auto firearm including shotguns.

Gun free zones are fine given that protection is provided those inside who were put at a disadvantage by leaving their self defense elsewhere. Post armed guards at schools. It doesn't need to be like a prison, but it does need to have restricted access. Too many campuses are just wide open, you can walk onto them from every direction and simply enter an unlocked door and start your .

If people are willing to demand freedoms be surrendered for the sake of safety, then campuses being locked down is one of the least intrusive measures and would at least ensure a checkpoint. Of course the two ideas aren't mutually exclusive, you can still work on identifying and helping those who need mental health care while at the same time creating and enforcing gun laws that keep the chaos to a minimum. Rapid fire semi-autos with high capacity magazines pretty much guarantee a high body count. It's not exclusive, because you can do the same with a car or a bomb, but we have to attack these things in parallel, it's not "this or that".

If one of those deaths is your child, you won't give two s about the percentages.

I highly doubt the Parkland kids would have been shot anyhow, unlike many of the gun related deaths that are related to lifestyle choices. I mean, apply that reasoning to terrorism on aircraft. Let's not screen and just leave the flight deck cabin door open. The total deaths would still be minuscule compared to automobile related fatalities. I wouldn't want to fly though.

It's not mutually exclusive; if hammers are a problem we can address that as well.

You should see my facebook feed

I think you should be required to show need for any semi-auto firearm including shotguns.
Self defense is good enough for me. How can you quantify and prove that on paper?

Gun free zones are fine given that protection is provided those inside who were put at a disadvantage by leaving their self defense elsewhere.
If the protection is a gun, then it totally negates the idea of a gun free zone. It's a silly idea anyways.

    Post armed guards at schools.
Armed veterans, not some pussy guard who's going to hide in the janitor's closet. I agree though armed guards, maybe even teachers and coaches.

If people are willing to demand freedoms be surrendered for the sake of safety, then campuses being locked down is one of the least intrusive measures and would at least ensure a checkpoint.
This is our problem. We are willing to surrender our freedoms for Big Government to come in and give us the illusion of feeling safe. This is where the lines blur with gun control.
