Austin Spurs championship incoming.![]()
Seems, not necessarily promising, but at least he has a skill that should be useful.
Matt Costello signs with the Spurs!!! http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...ostello-58737/
Apparently can rebound, but can he do anything else?
Skill set over athleticism...
Seems to be Spurs approach
From this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iA5k6znvAqE He can shoot 3's. I guess another Lauvergne type player?
Spurs stocking up on Matt Bonner clones?
When that skill is rebounding, I'm okay with it.
I think he's a 3 and rebound kind of guy.

He really isn't a 3 point shooter. He's hit 8 out of 37 3 pointers last year in the D-League, less than 20%. In the summer league he went 1 for 6.
So sad... I just checked the numbers. I guess Spurs will never expect him to shoot.
Simmons/Dedmon were great athletes but pretty much one trick pony. Pretty much lacked basic fundamentals of a basketball player but their athleticism couldn't be ignored.
Spurs seems to looking for players who can shoot from 3, midrange, pass and just do the little things that matter. Spurs are by far a more talented team offsensively but their defense is the real question or concern
8/37 = 21.6% ... tbh
Looks like a baby David Lee in every way...
Yes, I mixed up the numbers. Should have been 7/38.
poor man's David Lee?
sad.
But there's one variable, sources say, that might be the driving factor of player movement going forward: Gregg Popovich.
Pop begins his term as the head coach of Team USA this year and his contract lasts through the 2020 Olympics in Japan. (Sidenote: Spurs' VP of basketball operations Monty Williams was an assistant coach on the 2016 USA squad.) Could the Spurs be playing the long game here?

Spurs clearly gave up on the upcoming season ... really looks like they will try something bigger next off-season which has some interesting free agents but many teams with missing cap space
How did they give up exactly?
i don't understand that conclusion either. trades off the bat impacted the FA market in a big way. and the spurs may have never fully gone in on CP3 either. it's quite possible the spurs didn't give up so much as they just opted to be more conservative with their cap space because they felt they had more options for 2018 in regards to cap flexibility, which is something the spurs never really had this summer.
well, I guess they had plans trading LMA and some other players like Green to shake things up a bit ... nothing happened and you cannot tell me this off-season is not a letdown compared to what other teams have done
Yep. The top Western Conference teams engaged in an arms race that the Spurs never entered. I expect them to come in 4th (at best) in the West.
Although their current roster is so strange that I am still holding on to the slim hope that they are making a trade. Heck, training camp is still a month away. A lot can happen.
but the spurs aren't interested in 2nd or past that. OKC may be and houston might consider getting to the WCF a big step, but SA may just have thought after surveying the landscape that the risks regarding taking up cap space would have been unjustified. spurs never had cap flexibility and LMA's trade value was devalued by a cardiac condition, an up and down playoff run and rumors about his at ude. in the end, from an actuarial perspective, 2018 may have ultimately made far more sense. a run at 2-4 in the meantime keeps the franchise on the map, generates revenue and perpetuates the conversation that the 2018 FA's need to hear about them being the missing piece.
True, but we have another year of continuity for the most part. The last few years there's been pretty significant changes.
They can be better than they were last season, and just because on paper other teams improved, it's not a sure thing they'll be better.
Yea. It's possible the options they had weren't worth it.
Adding Gay and potentially playing smaller could in it of itself show a big time improvement for us. Not to mention the potential development of some our younger guys.
Next off season there can be big FA stuff going on, but I def don't think they threw in the towel this off-season.
I don't see them below a 3rd seed honestly. I think sometimes people get caught up in going for the big names.
A little change in philosophy alone could show major improvements.
