NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Monday Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson will be suspended eight games as part of the league's new conduct policy.

    Johnson

Goodell did give Johnson the chance to reduce the suspension to six games if he meets certain conditions. The league notified Johnson he could reduce the suspension by two games if he has no further adverse involvement with the law, complies with all the league requirements and doesn't participate in any practices or organized team workouts during the suspenson.

Johnson will be allowed to be at the Bears facility during the suspension for counselling sessions and other approved activities, including physical treatment or individual workout sessions.

Johnson could review the matter no later than Oct. 1 to determine if the suspension can be reduced to six games.

Johnson's suspension is not as severe as Pacman Jones of the ans, who is expected to miss the entire season despite not having any previous convictions. It's the same length as Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, who had a few incidents that led to convictions.

Johnson served 60 days in jail for violating probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor weapons charge. In 2005, Johnson was arrested for possession of a handgun. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months probation and 40 hours of community service. In February of 2006, he was charged with aggrevated assault and resisting arrest after becoming engaged in a verbal dispute with a police officer. Charges were eventually dropped.

In December, Lake County police searched Johnson's home and allegedly discovered six firearms. He was charged with violation of probation and possession of unlicensed firearms.

The 6-3, 300-pound Johnson has played three seasons with the Bears and is an important part of the defensive line. He's more of the run-stopper next to Tommie Harris, whose quickness allows him to shoot the gap and disrupt plays in the backfield.

Johnson is eligible to participate in the team's offseason workout program and will be allowed to partcipate in preseason games.

    Sun, 10 Jun 2007 18:01:26 -0700

MiamiDolphins.com reports Miami Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron was impressed by WR/PR Ted Ginn Jr. Cameron said, "As a returner, you can see why he is what he is. He just catches the ball effortlessly. The one thing as a returner, and I don't think (general manager) Randy (Mueller) and I have shared this with you, a big part of playing in this division is if we thought we could get an impact punt returner, we wanted a guy who had handled punts in tough weather. He's from Cleveland and he played in the Big 10. Now you go to Buffalo, you go to New York, you go to New England, now he's back there returning punts, and you can see where it's just natural. The first thing they have to do is catch it. No matter how fast they can run, they have to be able to field it. I though for a first practice, he was everything I thought he was and then some. There are a ton of receivers in this league who want to have no interest in being that punt returner. That's why first and foremost he was brought in, to be the punt returner."

I'm going to have to carry my part and we're all going to come together and put it together as a team effort." Maroney remains noncommittal about whether he will be ready by the start of training camp July 27.

Four-year veteran Chris Brown, the top tailback still available in the unrestricted free agent market, on Monday afternoon reached agreement in principle on a one-year contract to return to the Tennessee ans, the team with which he has played his entire career.

    Brown

Financial details of the contract were not immediately available. Brown had narrowed his choices last week to the ans and Chicago Bears, and had indicated that a decision was imminent

The contract proposals for Brown were said to be similar, but the opportunities with the two franchises were not. With his return to the ans, the four-year veteran immediately becomes the odds-on favorite to reclaim the starting job he lost to the now-departed Travis Henry in 2006.

The ans aren't very deep at tailback, certainly can't count on second-year pro LenDale White to seize the opportunity that's been presented to him, and are familiar with Brown and his upright running style. The former Colorado star had a 1,000-yard season in 2004, registered 1,918 rushing yards in 2004-2005, and likes working with Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher.

In 42 games, including 28 starts, Brown carried 541 times for 2,295 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brown, a third-round choice in the 2003 draft, rushed for a career-best 1,067 yards in just 11 appearances in 2004. Cedric Benson on the depth chart, and would taken the place of Thomas Jones, who was traded to the New York Jets this spring. He definitely would have gotten carries in the share-the-workload system favored by Bears coach Lovie Smith, and might have had a chance for a Super Bowl appearance.

But the chance to be a starter again in Tennessee, to re-establish himself in the league and then go back into free agency next spring, was the factor that most worked in favor of the ans.

Brown was also courted to varying degrees by Indianapolis, New England and Green Bay.

Jason Whitlock, of the Kansas City Star, reports there is a possibility Kansas City Chiefs RB Larry Johnson will hold out during training camp if he does not get a new contract. "The point I'd like to get out is that if we were to have to hold out, it would be for the sake of good business, not being greedy. I think the picture that is being painted right now in the eyes of the fans is that we're coming into this negotiation being greedy. It's not good business for a player who rushes the ball 416 times in a season, back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons, back-to-back 1,700-yard seasons, back-to-back broken Kansas City Chiefs records, it's not good business for him to come back in and play for $1.7 million. And that's a sensitive area because $1.7 million is a lot more than most people in Kansas City make," said Alvin Keels, Johnson's agent.

Olsen, Bears work out unique five-year deal
    By Len Pasquarelli

    Updated: July 3, 2007, 8:45 PM ET

The Chicago Bears reached a contract agreement with top pick Greg Olsen, on Tuesday, making the former University of Miami tight end the initial first-round selection in the league to come to terms on his rookie contract.

Greg Olsen had 38 catches for 444 yards last season at Miami.
And in striking the deal, agent Drew Rosenhaus and Bears negotiator Cliff Stein relied on a creative structure that could pave the way for other first-round signings.

Olsen, the 31st player chosen overall in April, will sign a five-year contract with a maximum value of $10.696 million.

Rosenhaus and Stein were able to overcome some hurdles presented by a recent ruling in a case involving former Denver first-round wide receiver Ashley Lelie, limiting the amount of bonus money which a franchise could attempt to recoup if a player defaulted on his contract.

The contract will pay Olsen a signing bonus of $250,000 and a $720,000 roster bonus in the first year, with a 2007 base salary of $285,000.

In 2008, there is an option bonus of $3.545 million, and there are reporting bonuses of $100,000 in 2009, $140,000 in 2010 and $125,732 in 2011. The base salaries in the deal, after the first season, are $370,000 (2008), $460,000 (2009), $550,000 (2010) and $650,000 (2011). Olsen can earn an additional $2.921 million in incentives and escalators and a one-time playing time incentive of $578,700.

"It's a big relief, given that Greg has been with us throughout the offseason program," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo told the team-owned Web site on Tuesday night. "I mentioned to him and his family that he really built up a lot of good karma with the players and coaches [because of his attendance], and now this allows us to continue that momentum going into camp. When you don't get a deal done, or it drags into camp, all of that good will gets lost, and then it has to be rebuilt. So now, he can just continue to build on all the good things that he's done thus far and, obviously, we're excited about that."

Olsen, 22, is the latest in a long line of former Miami standout tight ends, a group that includes Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey and Kellen Winslow, among others.

In 33 games, including 26 starts, Olsen, who transferred to Miami from Notre Dame, posted 87 receptions for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns. Regarded as the top tight end prospect in the draft entering the combine workouts, he cemented his status with a superb audition for league scouts in Indianapolis.

At 6-feet-5 7/8 and 254 pounds, Olsen was clocked in 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash, a time faster than that registered by most of the wide receivers at the combine. He also had a 35 ½-inch vertical jump and his overall athleticism enhanced his draft stock. Olsen has acknowledged that, like most young tight ends, he will need to upgrade his blocking skills, but the Bears are confident he will play quickly and add another key dimension to their passing attack.

Chicago was the first team in the league to have all its draft choices under contract in each of the past two years. The agreement with Olsen leaves the Bears with just one of their nine picks this year, second-round defensive end Dan Bazuin of Central Michigan, without a deal in place.

Most teams in the league have yet to commence substantive negotiations with their first-round draft choices.

Defensive end Dwight Freeney has spent his entire football career chasing and sacking quarterbacks. Now, he's going to be paid as the premier player at his position.

    Defensive End
    Indianapolis Colts

    Profile

2006 Season Stats Tot Solo Ast FF Sack Int
    29 26 3 4 6 0

Freeney, the Indianapolis Colts' franchise player, signed a six-year, $72 million contract with the team Friday that includes a $30 million signing bonus. He becomes the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

"To have me paid among the top players in the league -- not just as a defensive players -- means a lot of me," said Freeney, who flew to Indianapolis on Thursday night in anticipation of accepting the deal. "[Colts general manager] Bill Polian is the one who drafted me. I was hand-picked by him. He was going to do the right thing for the organization."

Polian drafted Freeney in the first round in 2002 and watched him develop into one of the game's most disruptive defensive players. Freeney registered 56½ sacks during his first five seasons with the Colts and has forced 27 fumbles during his career.

Freeney and the Colts had until Monday to hammer out a long-term deal. Had that not happened, Freeney and the Colts would have been forced to settle for the one-year tender at $9.43 million, which would have left Freeney to decide whether or not to hold out.

Neither Polian nor Freeney wanted that to happen. Freeney expressed throughout the offseason that he wanted to remain a Colt. He attended most of the team's offeseason activities while Polian and Freeney's agent, Gary Wichard, worked on an agreement.

Freeney will receive $37.72 million over the first three years of the contract. In doing the deal, the Colts will save $3.68 million of salary-cap room that they can use to keep other players whose contracts are expiring. The Colts had $3.4 million of cap room before reaching agreement with Freeney.

"This really shows a commitment," Freeney said. "I have to thank [Colts owner] Jim Irsay and Bill Polian. They have done most of their big deals with the offense prior to this. Now, they've gotten to the defense and the guys who can go out and make some big plays on defense."

Depending on the way insiders view contracts, Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour had been the league's highest-paid defensive player if you consider the new money in a three-year, $28 million contract he signed in 2006. The Patriots view that deal as a $7.5 million-a-year contract if you include Seymour's salary in 2006.

Freeney's contract takes the top defensive pay scale to the $12 million-a-year range.

"I feel great about this because no one usually gets paid for the impact they have on the team," Freeney said. "To have a contract that pays me among the top players in the league and not just for being a defensive player means a lot. Normally, tight ends get paid with other tight ends and offensive linemen get paid with other offensive linemen."

This deal will have a significant impact on other top pass-rushers who are in negotiations to re-sign with their teams. New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs are pass-rushers who were waiting to see how Freeney's negotiations turned out.

"It's great to see the Colts are paying a guy who stops a quarterback like a quarterback," Freeney said.

CB and Patriots fail to reach contract agreement
    July 16, 2007

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Cornerback Asante Samuel and the New England Patriots failed to agree on a multiyear contract Monday, setting the stage for a possible holdout.

Samuel, coming off the best of his four seasons, can only play for the $7.79 million tender offer the Patriots made when they designated him as their franchise player. He skipped the team's mandatory minicamp last month and has said he intends to hold out until the 10th week of the regular season.

The club made no transactions on Monday, team spokesman Stacey James said. Samuel's agent, Alonzo Shavers, did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

The deadline for franchise players to reach a multiyear contract was Monday at 4 p.m. EDT. Now the two sides are not allowed to agree to one until after the season. Had the Patriots not placed the franchise tag on him, Samuel could have become an unrestricted free agent and they would not be compensated if he signed elsewhere.

Samuel, 26, tied Champ Bailey of Denver for the NFL regular-season lead with 10 interceptions last season. Samuel also has three interception returns for touchdowns in the playoffs, tying him with former Oakland Raider Willie Brown for the NFL record.

The Patriots drafted Samuel in the fourth round out of Central Florida in 2003.

, I'd for the Colts to pick him up if he can't reach an agreement with the Pats, but Irsay just blew his wad on Freeney at $72 mil. I guess they couldn't get him until after the season anyway so it doesn't matter.

Oh well, Samuel is one of the best corners in the NFL so if he doesn't play that's bad news for NE.

Colts' LT Glenn walking away with year left on deal
    ESPN.com news services

    Updated: July 21, 2007, 2:09 PM ET

Indianapolis Colts left tackle Tarik Glenn has informed the team he will retire and will not report for training camp, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Saturday.

A Colts' teammate told Mortensen, "[Glenn] just feels burned out. It's that simple."

The Indianapolis Star and ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli had earlier reported that according to league sources, Glenn, a mainstay on the Colts' offensive line, was leaning toward retirement.

Addressing the earlier reports, Glenn's agent, Ralph Cindrich, said he could not address the issue and that all comments would have to come from his client. There was no official word from the team on whether Glenn had made his decision final.

Glenn has been a mainstay on the Colts' offensive line for 10 years and been a key to the excellent pass protection afforded quarterback Peyton Manning.

There had been speculation that Glenn, 31, and entering the final year of his contract, might be floating the retirement scenario as motivation for the Colts to offer a contract extension. But sources said the veteran offensive lineman was very serious in his deliberations about leaving the game as a Super Bowl champion.

Glenn is scheduled to earn a base salary of $4.5 million in 2007.

Glenn's departure would create a huge void for the Colts just a week before the start of training camp. There are no other accomplished left tackles on the Indianapolis roster and few quality veterans remaining among the free agents who are still looking for work.

Indianapolis chose Tony Ugoh in the second round of this year's draft, sending their 2008 first-round pick to San Francisco to move into position to select the former Arkansas star. But it is not believed he is ready to start. In fact, the plan was to use Ugoh primarily at guard this season, and groom him to eventually replace Glenn, perhaps as early as 2008.

Second-year veteran Charles Johnson, a sixth-round choice in 2006, has played some at left tackle, but lined up more often on the right side. Starting right tackle Ryan Diem struggles at times in pass protection, so switching him to the left side likely would not be an option.

There were apparently no indications earlier in the spring that Glenn, the Colts' first-round choice in the 1997 draft, was thinking of retiring. He participated in the offseason program and was at the team's mandatory minicamp.

A former University of California star, Glenn has appeared in 154 games for the Colts, all as a starter. The last 138 of those starts all came at left tackle. Glenn has missed just six games in his career, all in 2003.

I would say the Colts will now get owned against the pass rush but Peyton is too smart and good. He'll get sacked a few more times but he's still Peyton and they upgraded their offense so far if you can believe their O getting any better.

Texans' Green makes downpayment on home for single mom

HOUSTON -- When Regina Foster tells her son Reginald they're finally moving from an apartment to their own home, the 7-year-old with autism likely won't comprehend what that means.

I never realized how important this could be. I thought it could be big, but I was nowhere in the ballpark of what it would mean to this one family.
    Ahman Green

But when he sees the backyard, he'll be happy and that's all that matters to Foster, a single mom.

"He'll respond to that," she said with a smile.

Foster's dream of home ownership is coming true thanks to Ahman Green and the Houston Texans. On Monday, Green made good on a promise to make the down payment on a home for a single parent in exchange for reclaiming his No. 30 from teammate Jason Simmons.

"This is for Reggie," Foster said, tears running down her cheeks when she was surprised at work by Green and Simmons. "He needs it. Kids with autism can't adapt well to change, so it will be wonderful to have something we don't have to ever leave."

Foster received a check for $50,000, with Green donating $25,000 and Texans owner Bob McNair contributing the rest.

"You definitely deserve it and we're happy to do it," Green said as Foster thanked him while hugging him repeatedly.

Foster, who works for a mortgage company, was chosen from five finalists who met strict criteria that included a pledge to do 100 hours of community service and contribute at least $1,500 toward the down payment.

"I always wanted to use my star power to help people," said Green, who signed as free agent with the Texans after playing in Green Bay since 2000. "When we have the opportunity to do that it's just overwhelming."

Foster said she knew nothing about football and reluctantly admitted she wasn't a Texans fan.

"I just became one," she joked, adding that she'll dedicate Reggie's room to the Texans. Green said they'd donate Texans gear for the room.

Simmons, who came up with the idea when Green approached him about the number he'd worn since the inception of the franchise, had to fight back tears during the presentation.

"This is emotional," Simmons said. "When I thought of this I couldn't have imagined anything on this level. The best part is that she's not worried about herself, she wants a place for her son."

Green said part of the reason why Foster was chosen was because he learned through work with Easter Seals the difficulties and expense of caring for a child with special needs.

Foster has been trying to buy a house for some time to provide her son more stability and give him a backyard in which to play. She quickly found that her lack of money for a down payment would make such a purchase difficult and had put her plans on hold until Monday.

"I had been getting discouraged," she said. "I couldn't afford the down payment, but because of them I can finally do this."

Madeline Jones, a friend and co-worker of Foster's, said Foster was a hard worker and she couldn't think of anyone who deserved this more.

"Her son is her life," Jones said. "This is a dream come true. I don't think these guys even realize how big this is to her. It's unreal."

Green said it was hard to believe his promise had evolved from some words and a handshake with Simmons to a reality.

"I never realized how important this could be," he said. "I thought it could be big, but I was nowhere in the ballpark of what it would mean to this one family."

Jets running back Martin to announce retirement this week
    ESPN.com news services

    Updated: July 24, 2007, 11:19 AM ET

Jets running back Curtis Martin, the fourth leading rusher in NFL history who hasn't played since the 2005 season, will make it official this week and announce his retirement from the NFL.

The news that an announcement is imminent was first reported by The New York Post.

The Jets open training camp Friday and are expected to hold a news conference before camp begins to announce the running back's retirement.

Last month, Martin re-worked his contract for a second straight year to provide the team more salary cap room.

Martin tore cartilage in his right knee in Week 2 of the 2005 season against Miami, and aggravated it two games later against Baltimore. He played through the pain, but ended his season after the Jets' 12th game.

The five-time Pro Bowler said the knee became a "bone-on-bone" situation when the damaged cartilage was surgically removed in December 2005. He was slow to recover and was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list before training camp so he could rehabilitate the knee and did not play last season.

Martin spent his first three seasons with New England, and came to the Jets as a restricted free agent in 1998. His best year was his last healthy season in 2004, when he led the league in rushing with 1,697 yards and tied Barry Sanders' record of 10 straight 1,000-yard seasons to start a career.

Martin, 34, has carried 3,518 times for 14,101 yards and 70 touchdowns in 168 games. Only Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton and Sanders have compiled more rushing yards.

After using three different starters at tailback in 2006, and finishing 20th in the league in rushing offense, the Jets acquired Thomas Jones in a trade with the Chicago Bears this spring, and he is the projected starter.

NFL denies Thurman's request for reinstatement
    By Len Pasquarelli
    ESPN.com

Middle linebacker Odell Thurman has been denied reinstatement by the NFL and the Cincinnati Bengals' one-time starter will have his suspension continued at least through the 2007 campaign.

That means Thurman will miss a second straight season, putting his career in jeopardy.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who met recently with Thurman, made the decision. The Bengals, who anticipated that Thurman would be cleared to return, made the announcement of Goodell's ruling on Thursday morning in a news release.

Thurman will be able to apply again for reinstatement after this season.
One of Thurman's representatives, Saf Lawson, had said repeatedly that his client was in compliance with the conditions of his one-year suspension, and that he expected to be back with the Bengals. Neither Thurman nor Lawson could be reached on Thursday morning for comment.

Thurman filed his reinstatement paperwork nearly a month ago, so that it would be in the NFL offices well in advance of July 12, which marked the one-year mark of his suspension.

Thurman, a Bengals' starter in 2005 when he led them in tackles as a rookie, was initially suspended for four games when he missed a scheduled drug screening. The sanction was subsequently increased to a year after Thurman was arrested on DUI charges Sept. 25.

Earlier this spring, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis indicated that Thurman would be welcomed back to the team, and would be able compete for a roster spot in training camp, if the league reinstated him.

"I have been in contact with Odell and he has an opportunity to be reinstated," Lewis said in mid-May, while appearing on a local radio show. "He will have had to ... (follow) the very strict NFL guidelines to get to that point and then, obviously, if reinstated, to go forward. And if that happens, he'll have an opportunity (to return)."

Lewis later backed away from that sentiment a bit and has not discussed Thurman's status in detail since then.

Last month, two men in Thurman's hometown of Monticello, Ga., filed complaints against Thurman, alleging that he hit and kicked them at a party. On the day the complaints were to be heard by a local magistrate, they were withdrawn. It is not known how that incident might have affected Goodell's decision to deny reinstatement.

Despite missing much of his rookie training camp because of a protracted contract impasse, the 24-year-old Thurman appeared in 15 games in 2005, all as a starter, and registered 148 tackles, one sack, five interceptions, nine passes defensed and four forced fumbles. The former University of Georgia star, a second-round draft pick in 2005, was a candidate for defensive rookie of the year honors.

Bucs agree to terms with fourth overall draft pick
    ESPN.com news services

    Updated: July 26, 2007, 1:29 PM ET

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and defensive end Gaines Adams, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, have agreed to terms on a six-year contract, ESPN's John Clayton reported Thursday.

The deal maxes out at $46 million, with $18.56 million guaranteed.

Adams, at 6-foot-5 and 258 pounds, led the ACC with 12.5 sacks in 2006 and left Clemson tied with Michael Dean Perry for the top spot on the Tigers' career sack list with 28.

The Bucs, who went 4-12 last season and were 17th in total defense after ranking in the Top 10 for a decade, had not selected a defensive player in the first round since taking tackle Anthony McFarland at No. 15 overall in 1999.

Adams was in the spotlight in the days leading up to the draft after a recent story in Pro Football Weekly identified him and two other Top 10 picks, Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson and Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, as admitting during team interviews at the NFL scouting combine that they experimented with marijuana.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell warned that in the future, clubs will be disciplined for leaking confidential information from interviews with prospective players. He apologized to Adams and Johnson.
