So what mysteries are still unanswered? Running tally I can think of:

    so "dead is dead"?

    see: Locke
You're treating this show like some kind of objective reality you're observing from afar, rather than a narrative with writers behind it, writers who are trying to bring the narrative together to a close.

They gave us clues about Locke. He's a "proxy" for Christian Shephard. Notice how Christian is up and about?

In the church where Ben brought Jack, Kate, and Sun to meet Eloise, and where Desmond showed up too, the painting of Jesus (who was resurrected, representing LOCKE) and doubting Thomas (who represented JACK) figured prominently. That was a giant flashing marquee sign for you: "WE'RE GOING TO RESURRECT LOCKE."

Locke is supposed to be the leader of the Others. Well, in the story so far, he led the Others for about five seconds before he started flashing through time. He hasn't fulfilled his destiny. It was clear his story wasn't finished.

Daniel's story is finished. They painted all the numbers and drew all the lines for you. They even gave you a preview where they show Jack taking Daniel's notebook and intending to carry out Daniel's plan to detonate the H-bomb himself. Jack will end up causing "The Incident" and in trying to prevent the sequence of events that lead to Flight 815's crashing, he instead will bring them about. They are telegraphing the irony.

    The numbers Unknown
Smoke monster We know that it is the security system for the temple, but do not have an explanation for the essence of what it is.
Miles' ability Has something to do with the island
Desmond's ability Has to do with the electromagnetism he was exposed to when he turned the failsafe key
Jacob Will be appearing in the season finale
The Black and White theme in earlier seasons Just a storytelling device, not a mystery
The button Was part of a hastily developed scheme to prevent the electromagnetic energy source at the Swan station from being unleashed

If Jack did actually change things and prevent the Incident, then his flight wouldn't crash, he never would go back in time, and wouldn't be there to prevent the Incident. that's the weird thing that is also not explained....

why is it that when you get sick/hurt/dead off the island, that you can come to the island to get healed.......

yet if you get sick/hurt/dead on the island, you are pretty much screwed.........unless Richard can get you to the temple before you die.....

then why would she want to have him in the first place, knowing that she would shoot him later?
Maybe when she conceived him she figured she could change the outcome... only to later find out she had to direct him to his own death. You saw how depressed she was when she told him he couldn't play piano anymore. I'm guessing that scene was preceded by a very serious conversation with his father.

I'm betting the numbers explanation will be lame.

Smoke monster is becoming easier to guess......it's some kind of extension of the island/temple that kills off people it doesn't need

    Miles' ability/ Hurley's ability

Desmond's ability seemed to come from the blast. Walt's ability is the mystery.
If Walt and Daniel both end up having been born on the island (like Miles), then that might explain their special abilities.

Jacob was a weak concoction by the writers from season...(2?). I honestly believe they wish they could have that one back.

black and white is a mystery?

the button? I thought was just the dharma thing trying to keep the island from exploding?

Claire's disappearance is still a mystery.

Richard's apparent ability to never age is a mystery.

Well, more the mystery of why they focused so much on the black/white dichotomy in the earlier seasons, then seemed to go away from it entirely. And they never quite explained how the button worked to discharge the magnetic flux, but then again, I doubt they will.

Thanks for the one about Richard's age! Good call.

Also, the statue, and the use of hieroglyphics.

The writers can do what they want. But when they tell you through the narrative what they are doing, pay attention.

You can't assume Daniel is dead based on the way the episode ended any more than you could assume that Ben was dead the way that episode ended.
In what episode did they show Ben dying? Do you mean the one where Locke saw him lying unconscious and said, "He's the guy who killed me" ? The one where Caesar said Ben was "one of the injured" ? Injured, as in not dead.

huh? Christian has been up and about before and after Locke's death and revival.
Christian was dead. He came to the island. Now he's not particularly dead. Locke was a proxy for Christian on the Ajira flight, since Eloise and Ben couldn't just go get Christian's body off the island to put in a coffin on the flight. Now Locke's not particularly dead either.

great. Locke being resurrected on the island along with Ben being healed after being shot means it is within the rules to save Daniel.
It has nothing to do with "rules." It has to do with the writers telling you through the narrative they presented "we just killed Daniel off" and you either not paying attention or choosing not to believe it.

    eh. that's debatable.

either way, TV guide confirmed that he is no longer a full time member, so he is dead.

The question asked is "is he Locke dead, Charlie dead, or Christian dead?"

In what episode did they show Ben dying? Do you mean the one where Locke saw him lying unconscious and said, "He's the guy who killed me" ? The one where Caesar said Ben was "one of the injured" ? Injured, as in not dead.
no, the one where Sayid gunned him down.

Christian was dead. He came to the island. Now he's not particularly dead. Locke was a proxy for Christian on the Ajira flight, since Eloise and Ben couldn't just go get Christian's body off the island to put in a coffin on the flight. Now Locke's not particularly dead either.
difference being that Christian is dead in a Jacob kind of way. Locke appears 100% back to life, ready to lead the Others.

It has nothing to do with "rules." It has to do with the writers telling you through the narrative they presented "we just killed Daniel off" and you either not paying attention or choosing not to believe it.
I already said you had a point.

You win. Daniel's dead and you read the narrative and saw it coming. congrats.

no, the one where Sayid gunned him down.
If young Ben dies, it creates a paradox, since he can't grow up and bring Sayid back to the island to shoot him. When the writers spend the previous few weeks drilling into our heads that "what happened, happened" and that the past can't be changed, it gives us clues not to give up on little Ben just yet. When little Ben is in the infirmary with seemingly no chance of survival, and meanwhile Hurley is staring at his hand wondering if he is going to disappear on account on the paradox, it's the writers being goofy and telling you "we already know our way out of this."

If Faraday dies in his own "present," after telling Jack and Kate a few minutes beforehand, "hey, any of us could die!" in an episode where they finish telling Daniel's backstory and show us his mother getting all emotional about sacrificing him, it gives us clues that we can go ahead and order the flower arrangement.

difference being that Christian is dead in a Jacob kind of way. Locke appears 100% back to life, ready to lead the Others.
Do you really know what you think you know about Jacob?
