they traded one bad contract for an extremely bad contract and a prospect.
    Who did?

Contract-wise, Dallas got the better end of the deal.

Take a look at Caroll's contract. 5 more years in a Mavs uniform.

Good trade by Mavs. Dumping Diop's ugly contract in itself was a victory. Diop is only worthwhile on your team if you have a defensive coach who can live with his horrible offense. AJ could live with it. Brown might be able to live with it. Carlisle couldn't

Carroll isn't anything special but he's theoretically a good shooter. Plus, before the Bobcats got Bell, he was the designated perimeter stopper. That's not saying much considering his compe ion on the Bobcats but he's probably a capable 9th or 10th man on a contending team.

Hollins has always intrigued me as a prospect. As a raw athlete, you don't find his combination of quickness and jumping ability on a seven-footer too often. I think the Mavs should give him a long look because his athleticism combined with Kidd's passing could make him potentially a rotation player.

I can't really see a downside to this trade for the Mavs . . .

His salary decreases every year while Diop's increases. By the end of Carroll's contract, he'll be making only 2/3 of what Diop will be making. That's a win for the Mavs, even if it's a minor win.

Plus, I doubt they keep Carroll, I'm betting he goes in another deal.

So Donnie and Mark admitting their up of signing Diop last offseason.

At the very least Hollins can catch the ball and finish around the rim, which is more than Diop's 37% FG from the field.

Watching these videos of Hollins finishing with Bass like power around the rim makes me like this trade. He is basically just a non lazy ass athletic version of Diop. Really Diop's defense is just him being tall. Now we have a tall guy who can stand there playing defense and finish around the rim.
