If you're referring to the era where they won 3 superbowls, it was over already. Those teams were built around defense with an offense that ran the ball well, spread the ball around a lot, and emphasized ball control. Virtually all of the defensive starters from those teams are gone now, the offense can't run the ball for jack , does anything but spread the ball around, and does anything but control the ball.

But you're right, that eras been over for a while. I think now its just safe to say that a rebound is not gonna happen.
It could happen depending on the moves made this off season. I think Belichick needed this season to realize that no matter how good a coach he believes he is NE can't have such a lack of talent at running back and linebacker.
It wasn't Harbaugh's fault moreso than the assholes upstairs. He had no good view of it and I am pretty sure the jumbotron operators in NE weren't replaying it over and over so he could get a clear look.
