I don't know about breakfast, but for lunch if you want overpriced, neo-trailer park / hipster tacos with toppings like fried avocado, then Torchy's can't be beat.

For the record, they're not keeping Austin weird, they're making Austin y.

In defense of Torchy's, their breakfast tacos are just the regular, run-of-the-mill (except for the migas). It's the other tacos that get pricey. They run about $2.00 each which seems pretty normal to me. That and they're large. Still pretty bland though.

Fair enough; now that I think about it I have only been there for lunch. Once.

So I'll fix the previous post.

What a bunch of horse dung. Best Breakfast tacos in Ausin or San Antonio?
    No way Jose!

Border towns such as Brownsville, Laredo, El Paso and all throughout the entire rio grande zone have the best tacos and mexican cuisine.

To heck with this Tex-Mex stuff.

    Mexican > Tex Mex

Pork Tips in a tomatillo sauce/ that is as thick and rich like a curry gravy with rice and beans beats any tortilla/cheese/bean/lettuce/tomatoes/onions/beef/sourcream combo.

Just imagine some of the more well known Mexican dishes, but a bas ized version, covered in too much cheese...

...or filled w/ brisket. They LOVE to do that.

This place/truck called Andrews near the Bexar County Jail sells a killer Migas taco that I absolutely loooove!

San Antonio vs Austin...I've never had an Austin tacos, but I can definitely say that there is not an even decent breakfast taco outside of Texas that's not made by a Texan. I remember my first year visiting family in Denver, CO and they suggested getting "Breakfast Burritos". Burritos...tacos...they seem pretty similar so we thought go for it. Worst mistake ever! I order a sausage and egg...I get scrambled egg (not even the good kind that was made in the same pan as the bacon) with two sausage patties on top of the egg (SAUSAGE PATTIES, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!) wrapped in a cardboard tasting tortilla. It was so bad. I'll never eat a breakfast taco outside of Texas ever again.

Yeah I've been to Ruthies a few times and they are pretty damn good. The tortillas are great.

The trick with Mexican food is the tier looking the establishment, the better tasting food.

It is a fine line that must be walked.

My mom makes the best Tacos in San Anto! First of all, she makes the tortillas by hand. None of this store bought, ty ass tortillas that are filled with preservatives. I'm not going to give out the family recipe for our tortillas, but she adds warm milk, eggs, and another secret ingredient that make them fluffy, soft, and buttery when you bite into them.

If only my girl knew how to cook real Mexican/Tex-Mex food, I would ask for her hand in marriage right away. Her idea of cooking is; buying store bought Mission tortillas, then slapping them with canned refried beans with pace picante sauce. I don't tell i throw them away or give them to my dog, and pick up some real tacos from Ruthies on my way to work.

    am I a bad BF??

Not that I'm an expert, but here's the best definition between tex mex and regular mex that I've heard.

tex mex = regular mex with twice the taste and three times the calories

Tacos al pastor are amazing, if and only if you get them in Mexico. Americans are too lazy to make them the right way.
