I think travel plays a HUGE role...........look how close LSU, Ark, Tenn, Bama, Auburn, Miss are to A&M. You will get many more fans to support your team on a roadie if they dont have to travel to Oregon, Washington or California...........at least IMHO.
that is also a good point. i have heard this mentioned on several occassions.

I don't think Texas cares if the Big 12 stays or goes, they just want the sweetest deal. None of us here know what is actually being said but IMO, I doubt being blamed for the possible breakup of the B12 is on the minds of the powers that be in Austin.
Idiot. You ing idiot. When the UT President gets called on the carpet before the state legislature this week, which story do you think he'd rather tell?

    A) " you, Baylor, all the rivalries, the Big XII, we're going where the TV money and the academic prestige is in the Pac-16, and we will crush anyone who stands in our way, because we have the richest, most powerful athletic program in America, and we're going to make damn sure it stays that way."

    B) "This is all A&M's fault. We were committed to keeping the conference together, but aggy was bound and determined to join the SEC. No we have no choice but to make the best of this terrible situation, which is, as we mentioned, all A&M's fault, by joining the Pac-16."

Sorry, but I still believe that Texas' only motivation is money and they don't care what happens to anyone else as long as they get paid.

As far as what UT will say to the legislature....probably some crap about academics or something...a good dose of double talk that politicians will be able to appreciate.

A&M's travel would be limited to the Pac-16 East division for the most part though. They would only make 2 trips per year to Cali/Oregon/Washington max.

True, I see your point, but there would still be much less travel going east than west. Also, A&M would not have to go too far north and deal with the colder weather. I think they will go SEC personally.

You know aggie is scared of walking into Cal Berkley to the sight of women loving each other and pot smoking hippies (as aggie would describe them).

They would much rather walk into Fayettville Ark to the sight of brothers lovin sisters, you know, something familiar to aggie.

Eugene and Austin are very liberal too. Corvallis has some similarities to College Station though.

BIG12 is offering a package of 20-25mil per year for Texas to stay in the conference. Problem is the $$ to other schools isn't near that number and a huge disparity. I guess well see what happens.

A&M letting Texas know they are willing to split made UT reconsider its options.

Here is some from Billy Liucci.

Latest in A&M's SEC/Pac-10 decision: SEC commissioner Mike Slive in College Station today...more to come 4:02 PM Jun 12th via web
Just for clarification, A&M does indeed have TWO options on the table -- Pac-10 and SEC
If the Big 12 lasts as a 10-tm league, schools like BU and KU might want to thank A&M...had they fallen in line everyone would be P10 bound

    I dont think so

Then why "save" a smaller, weaker big 12, This was their plan?

    Good one

A&M never wanted to leave the big12...... They said this over and over and over again. It was Texas who was looking to leave so A&M had to look at its other options just incase UT would bolt west.

ESPN reporting that the new BIG12 offer would offer Texas the most $ annually and A&M the 2nd most. UT is trying to sweeten the pot and it might just work. OU taking a backseat in all this.

Looks like Big12-2 will stick together IMO. A&M never wanted to leave and making them the 2nd highest paid player in the conference might just keep them there for sure.

stallings has a lot of clout with the a&m board of regents and he does not want the big XII to break up. if it did, that is where he would favor the SEC. bu the first choice seems to be staying put.

Oh yeah, this will go over well with OU. They might leave to the SEC. Why dont they just split the money equally? Programs dont stay on top forever..........UT has been running thing lately. But A&M ran the conference back in the 80's, early 90's. OU ran it several years ago. *shrugs*

ESPN front page has a story saying that this plan to save the Big XII isn't believe to actually work.

Here's my question for Aggies though: Why do you want to save the Big XII? Aggies seemed to be excited about the SEC and their chance to do better in that conference (which isn't going to happen but they believe it). So who wants to stay on a sinking ship if going to the SEC is going to give you a recruiting advantage like you think (but which is also not true)?

I would prefer to go SEC then stay in the Big12-2. A&M AD has said over and over that first option will be to keep the Big12 together though...IF the money offered is somewhere near what the SEC can offer. From what I am hearing now is that the Big12-2 is able to Offer Texas more $ than the Pac10 is offering and A&M more $ than the SEC can offer annually. Other big 12 teams will continue to get screwed and not payed as much but are wiling to accept that to stay in a BCS conference "BU AND KU".

Isnt the disparity in revenue sharing what led up to all of this??? So how is making it even more of a disparity going to lead to the long term good of the conference? the Oklahoma schools should start making overtures to the SEC, maybe the Big 12 will throw some more cash their way too.

The big 12 may not implode this year, but it will eventually.
