I'm not too bent out of shape over the list and how weird and so seemingly wrong some of the rankings, inclusions, and omissions are. Justin Timberlake definitely threw me when I saw his name. Whoever participated in the poll seemed to really touch mostly the mainstream and popular artists. And sometimes when you make lists of rankings, someone just slips your mind. It's like making a list of top NBA small forwards and forgetting Carmelo Anthony. And you look at someone else's list and you're like, "how the did I forget him." I'm sure some of the people voting wish they could re-do their list in retrospect.

You guys have already mentioned most of the weird rankings and omissions, but I'll add a few. Like I said, seems like most of the artists are mainstream or at least commercially successful. For me, it's a shame when a list like this fails to include Miles Davis, The Meters, Nina Simone, Wu-Tang (when there are other rap artists on the list), Stevie Ray Vaughnn, Garth Brooks, any other Motown artists other than Marvin and Stevie like the Temptations, Four Tops, Supremes, or Smokey and the Miracles, Sachmo or Ella or Duke Ellington because of what I can only guess is that those artists slipped their minds. Seems like the majority of artists listed were mainstream artists from mainstream genres who had commercial success. What about Carlos Santana? And it's a crying shame to see Curtis Mayfield all the way down at #84 when he blows away almost everyone on the list as a pure musician, but at least he's listed and not forgotten like some others.

But I guess it's just a matter of opinion...

So if the first 5 are in alphabetical order, that means it's essentially a 5-way tie for 1st place? Hmmm, and Bob Dylan is there but Elvis isn't? Seems like someone just sat around naming as many artists as they could off the top of their head.
I think they listed the top 5 alphabetically because they didn't yet want to divulge what the order is so we have to wait for the actual VH1 special when it's aired.

hey IM, since you are of similar ethnic origins, are you upset that they left Ricky Martin, Enrigue/Julio Igelsias, Menudo and J-Lo off the list?

I'm pissed, bro. Menudo should be in the top 50.

It's too bad Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young weren't together that long. Neil Young has had an excellent career but in my view, the sound of CSNY trumps Neil on his own.

Anyway back on topic...I like where Nirvana's at but think Pearl Jam should have a better spot..
Yeah, Pearl Jam was way too low. They should be in the Top 50. Maybe not ranked high, but definitely in the Top 50 if Coldplay is on this list. Pearl Jam was much better in their prime than Coldplay could hope to be.

A friend of mine was telling me her bf said Pearl Jam was a superior band to Nirvana and he couldn't understand why people loved Nirvana more than Pearl Jam. She's a huge Nirvana fan like me.

I basically said that while I love Pearl Jam, Nirvana was much more powerful. Jeremy is probably PJ's best, most powerful song. But not a single PJ song was emotionally raw like Nirvana was. Not only that, but Nirvana could be melancholy or aggressive. Pearl Jam didn't have the emotional range that Nirvana had, even though PJ songs are technically sound and more diverse.

It's basically the Rolling Stones to Beatles argument, but the light version. Those were the two most influential bands of the 90s.

Korn wasn't giving you the meaning of life, just making some teens feel like someone understands them.

"Clown" was a powerful song to someone considered an outcast. When "Here to Stay" came out, it vocalized exactly what was going on in my life at the moment (having two best friends ing with me and just pulling me in different directions).

I wouldn't say the songs were life changing, just very good.

Significant Other was a very good album considering the source. Limp Bizkit was a flash in the pan band, but Significant Other was almost too good to be made by Fred Durst.

Just to add one more point to my Nirvana vs PJ tangent that no one really cares about, Nirvana was so good that Smells Like Teen Spirit was turned into a lullaby rendition and came out sounding like this.

That's an amazingly beautiful song in and of itself. And to think it's a recreation of the greatest song of the 90s.
