San Antonio is like the poorest city in the NBA. Why do y'all think people have 50-200 bucks lying around to attend one out of 41 basketball games to fill up the Alamodome?
The top ten poorest cities in the U.S. based on median household income (NBA cities only):
    #1 Detroit
    #2 Cleveland
    #3 Miami
    #9 Memphis

Ten poorest cities in U.S. based on % living below poverty level (NBA cities only):
    #1 Detroit
    #4 Cleveland
    #5 Miami
    #8 Milwalkee
    #9 Philadelphia

But maybe you meant poorest city in terms of interior defense.

Sequ's absolutely right about the number of empty seats. I was there, and upstairs, there were whole rows in multiple sections that were empty. The Spurs may have been able to declare the game a sell out on paper, but I'd be shocked if that arena was 75% full in reality, even after the late stragglers got there.

I've been to hundreds of games at the AT&T Center and to every home opener in that building; the crowd last night was comparable to mid-week game in January against a horrible team. I've never before seen an opener with so many empty seats.

But it is a flat out ed location as far as attracting the marginal potential attendee. Its only going to get worse when we are a lottery team in a few years.

Wasnt the runner-up site by that quarry/factory/whatever further north on 35? I seem to recall the politics for choosing the 'hood was to revitalize that area, and i havent seen any evidence of that.
The location sucks, but that is the location because Bexar County had to step in to get the building done and, therefore, had to put it on County property. In 1999, the Spurs tried to work the deal for this building with the City of San Antonio and proposed a number of locations for construction, including a plot of land next to the Alamodome and an abandoned quarry. But the City government insisted upon tying a number of far more controversial proposals to the Arena proposal in that election and the Spurs were understandably concerned that funding for the arena might be defeated by those who would rally in opposition to the other proposals.

Left without a means to have a public vote on arena funding and a looming threat that the team would move, the County government stepped in and made the proposal that was eventually put before the voters and passed. But the County could not propose the construction of its building on City property and the most logical plot of County-owned land for building the arena was the plot next to the Freeman Coliseum, which is county property.

Thus, we're stuck with a building where it is because it became the only viable plan for keeping the Spurs here in 1999.

Man, I really hope the Spurs don't get moved to another city when they become a lottery team.

Exactly this. It's not a problem when the economy isn't and there is a lot of excitement about the team or a particular game. But it is a flat out ed location as far as attracting the marginal potential attendee. Its only going to get worse when we are a lottery team in a few years.

Wasnt the runner-up site by that quarry/factory/whatever further north on 35? I seem to recall the politics for choosing the 'hood was to revitalize that area, and i havent seen any evidence of that.
the other site was the area that NEISD Hero's Stadium occupies today. Would have been a great site with the access to 35 and Wurzbach Pkwy. But it got built in the hood in the name of "economic revitalization" and has only attracted a beauty salon and a tattoo parlor

The most ballyhood team in the NBA (Heat) did not sell out in Philadelphia and they have not sold out for their home opener, as of yet. Fan attendance remains an issue of cost and a tight economy throughout the league.

Totally agree, but the visiting team had a lot to do with it too, I think. This was the crappiest opener since we opened against Indiana 8 or so years ago if I remember correctly (completely off the top of my head though). That's because the Spurs have traditionally been one of the big name teams getting a decent matchup for national TV.

Seattle only moved because their arena sucked and their lease was up. IIRC, part of the deal for the last round of renovations of the ATT on the taxpayers was a 5 year extension of their original 25 year lease. That should take them to 2032.

Wow ok. Nice stats. Let me rephrase poorest city that doesn't have a 75% black population.

The only city on that list that is over 75% black is Detroit. So what now?

im glad the spurs org is smart, theyre not going to panic like others unless it gets ridiculous. remember guys SA players call us the greatest fans in the nba so it sucks to see the turnout.

i also understand alot of ppl just cant afford going to games and getting a decent seat its not cheap. Another point is that pop always has started his seasons slow and careless so im sure alot of avrg spurs fans dont know the new season emphasis....and all of SA's little bull we live for here at ST

you guys realize that were fanatics in here dont you? lets just make that real clear gentlemen!!

Maybe some of us enjoy watching the game in High Def on our 52 inch LCD flat screen, Pioneer Elite 7.1 Receiver, Cable-with hard drive, and 8 speaker surround with Polk and Definitive Technology. Beer, snacks, free parking, what a deal! I'm thinking of selling tickets to view at my house!

Chill, have fun, it's only game 1!

Sounds like this guy is basing his stats off watching "The First 48" because watching that show would lead you to beleive the only white people in the city are cops.

This really has a lot to do with it. The game is better entertainment from home than it is in the upper decks. It's hard to justify paying for a ticket, fighting with traffic, paying for parking, setting next to a lady whose girth invades your space, while sitting in a seat designed for people who are 5-5 150, while trying to find a safe place for your popcorn, as you squint to watch the game, and end up watching the jumbotron so you can see what's really going on.

Hey, I have a 96in 1080 P with projector, with Definitive Technology all the around, 7.1, monster remote etc... but I still went to the game! But I definitely know where you are coming from.

There were empty seats, but I think it had more to do with people who had tickets just not going vs. tickets not getting sold. Afterall it was the pacers and it was a pretty boring game. I guess we will have to see how the season progresses.

Who gives a ! Sales figures show they sold out, thats all that matters. Place could be empty as long as the tickets are sold.

Seats still available for ‘Big Three’s’ Miami debut tonight

The Heat box-office still had more than 400 unsold seats for the opener, and a Heat spokeswoman said she does not expect any sellouts at home for the rest of the season thanks to late releases of tickets by the team.
