Damn I thought Fab had this heart thing solved. Looked like he was playing well in Portland. I was always cheering for Fab after he and Spurs parted ways. That year in Washington must have sucked. Fab was just great for us, and he'll be missed. And an all-class move to sign that contract addendum. No Spurs fan is surprised. Amare, Camby, Carmello ... those guys would sue for every last cent. They don't make many like Fab.

He'd look good in a suit behind the bench during a le run. Hey, a guy can dream!

Fabricio has something that his friend Scola will never have -- a ring.

    And he earned it.

Favorite memories from Fab: teeing off on the Jazz in the '07 WCF (didn't he go like 7-7 or 11-11 on fg or something ridiculous in one of those games?); and that HUGE layup late in the game that put the Cavs on ice in the '07 NBA finals.

Stay healthy, Fabricio--you are still loved and missed in San Antonio!

According to Manu, doctors didn't exactly force Oberto to retire. Could have kept playing, but figured it wasn't worth it anymore.

Spurs eulogize Oberto’s career, but not Oberto
    by jmcdonald

...He was a great guy. He was a great teammate. He was a big part of the Spurs’ championship program.

“Just being around him,” Tony Parker said, “made you a better person.”

    Great guy.

Respect that he saved the Blazers some money, too.
He could have just bolted with 3 mill, but he too spur-like for that.

    ...

Looking back, that was one strange Blazers player.

Nice guy. Better for him to go out on his own terms and preserve his health as best he can. Some of these NBA players get pretty banged up so hopefully he goes with some physical ability left in the tank.

Whatever the case, he goes out with championship ring with the Spurs.

    Makes sense.

Sucks that I won't see Oberto play against the Hornets on thanksgiving weekend. I bought tickets and was hoping to see him play in person.

Get well Fab! I'm happy you got a ring here and got the respect of Spurs fans!

Thanks Fab. Truly a fan favorite and a key, if unorthodox member of the Spurs.
I hope his heart gets back under control and he can enjoy his retirement.

    Oberto's retirement surprises Ginobili, Spurs
    By Mike Monroe

...“His career's been unbelievable,” Ginobili said after the Spurs' morning practice session. “He won everything everywhere he played. The most important thing is you'll never find anyone to say a bad word about him. He's one of those guys, a great teammate, always positive, always worrying about the team.”

...“It was going to happen sooner or later,” he said. “If it wasn't this year, it was going to be next year or the following. The fact he (retired) so surprisingly, it's got us all shocked.”
...“Fabby is a wonderful person and fantastic player,” Popovich said. “He was somebody who really knew how to play, a great compe or, great teammate and a joy to coach. He's somebody who is one of the good people on the Earth. He's really a sweet man.

“I'm happy for him. He's made the decision it's not worth it to push this physical situation. He's going to do great. He's going to become the No. 1 vintner in the world now.”

yeah I remember that... I think it was 11-11...

another favorite moment was when he got under someone's skin... intentionally... I think it was the lakers, and maybe bynum got ejected or something...
