He's a 10 day, filling spot #13. Perhaps we need to manage our expectations a bit.

I really like that we went for a long 3. Hopefully the guy can be another diamond in the rough for the Spurs.

I guess I could see the Spurs doing that with JA although it's probably a smart move it's unfortunate it happened this season. He looked like he was grasping things very well but expecting him to come in and pick up where he left off immediately while this team has gelled so well so far is asking a lot. Plus if people remember correctly, he missed a lot of training camp and pre-season and wasn't even in game shape at the time he went down with the injury. The guy is probably WAY out of shape right now... sending him to Austin to get in shape is actually a pretty smart idea, seeing that he won't get many minutes at all here.

Just because he'd get sent to Austin to get in shape doesn't mean he'd have to stay there...

    Exactly.

All-Star baseball players are sent to the minors on rehab assignments all the time. The only reason we don't see more of it in the NBA is that D-League assignments are limited to players in their first two seasons in the league.

Critics of this move should lighten up. This is a no-risk, potentially high-reward signing. The Spurs can take a short look at him now, and see if there is indeed something there to work with. Even if dividends don't pay of this year, it's a good move regardless.

Remember, the great Bruce Bowen took a similar path, before the Spurs landed him. Besides, with the defensive issues that this team has on the perimeter, it only makes sense that for them to be looking to improve in that area. The fact the Owens can also score, is a fantastic bonus.

Sounds good, we should try find someone better than Udoka as 13th man and backup 3.

It's good to see Spurs still trying defensive minded players for this 13th spot after Danny Green and Udoka. For a 28 years old player, Larry Owens has a unimpressive resume but I won't bash a player I've never saw played. In any case, 10 days contracts are a cheap and efficient way to test these kind of players, Spurs are taking no risk. If it's doesn't work, they could try a new player.

Kind of. One has to remember that Bruce was ALL-NBA D team the year before in Miami, before he decided to come to San Antonio. It's true that like Bruce, Larry Owens played in the French League. And that his path to the L, has been circuitous. Whatever the case, 10 day or whatever, it's up to him to show the Spurs how hard he's willing to work.

I also remind Bowen when I saw the career of Owens. It's a very low possibility, but somehow he can show Bowen effect.

Eventually Manu will be assigned to strickly coming off the bench maybe only in 4th quarters the way Kerr did to spark the offense in the latter part of Manus' career.
The Spurs will have needed to fill that spot sometime before that ala JA. They will still need a long defensive minded 3 pt shooting SF by then too. This guy might be an answer, maybe not THE answer, but it's worth a look, after all, he would be a backup.

Manu has two years left on his contract after this season. Do you really think he'll be relegated to a Kerr-like role before this deal is up?

    NO, I don't think that!
In the latter part of his career (not contract) is what I said, not current contract.

You do know that Manu has said that he wants to play until he's 36. He will turn 36 in the summer after this contract expires.

He is, indeed, a true compe or. Which is why I take him at his word when he tells us how much longer he intends to play. IMHO, Manu Ginobili will not hang around just to play a limited, Steve Kerr role in his late 30s.

Won't that be something - seeing Manu and TD coming off the bench as Dice does now to close out games? Would love to see the big 3 end their careers in SA.

Meh, Splitter might have asked Pop for some company on the bench. It gets lonely on the end.

Good signing if you ask me,and at least he is over 6 ft.

It'll be sad as to see Ginobili retire, but it'll be with 20 years of experience at the pro level and he's put a lot of wear and tear on his body. Amazing he can still compete at the level he does. Just a testament to how talented he really is.
