Obama has let us all down so many times before; no reason to think he won't again.
Broken clock, blind squirrel etc etc. I don't have high hopes, but maybe he'll magically land on a good action.

About the filibuster - I'm an idiot and I just realized you can't filibuster the budget. That being said, the idea that they would have been able to ram through a budget in a lame duck session is still a load of and would only serve to put this situation off a year even if they could manage to get a straight party line vote (with the blue dogs thats impossible).
So what about the 6+ months the democrats had prior to the lame duck session to get a budget done?

If you believe its that simple then I don't know what to tell you. There are serious implications for tax policy in this budget fight and that should not even be debatable at this point.

Yeah, it has nothing to do whatsoever with identifying income to support the spending.

They were too focused on trying to destroy our nation by other means.

Hey guys...I will be the first to agree that long term fiscal responsibility will require tax increases as well as budget cuts.

In the context of the current debate on the budget, however it is all about spending.

MB specifically said a couple of months. Its really pointless to say that the democrats ed up the chance to fix the budget because of electoral politics in an election year considering our political system.

To suddenly expect the democrats to rise above that is akin to expecting a one eyed unicorn to sit down on my lap and tell me a bed time story while making me richer than Bill Gates.

It also completely ignores that had that unicorn shown up, we'd be talking about the same thing just a year later. Better to just get it over with now, IMO.

So what? This is a short term budget. A lot of sacred cows from both sides of the aisle are gonna have to be slaughtered if they are ever going to REALLY get serious about deficits. It doesn't really matter which ones get killed first.
If that were the case, you would expect the Republicans to budge first. Of course, they're not budging either. The Dems alrady said they'd be willing to sign a "clean" bill (ie. fund the military without spending cuts).

This is pure politics, both sides playing chicken.

Thats great that you will concede that but it doesn't change the fact that the GOP has made public statement after public statement that is the opposite of that. Perhaps if you or I were running the negotiations we'd actually get somewhere, CC, but we're not.

The last time the government had a major shutdown was in 1995, and military members continued to work and receive pay during the government shutdown. What makes anyone think that won't happen again? Neither party will want the finger pointed at them.

Actually CC is correct. The budget is what we feel like spending. Tax policy is what we feel like paying. The difference between the two is defecit.

Now in a rational world those two should be interdependent, but our political parties ditched such rational behavior decades ago..............

That situation was different. The defense budget was already agreed upon then. It's not now.

I think there is some current law statute that continues to pay military members, Social security, Air traffic controllers, etc; in the event of a shutdown. At least there used to be.

Jack, if the budget doesn't get approved, the military isn't getting paid. End of story.
