While I don't think it's an issue long term, I think the big engineering challenge is what does it do when comms are completely jammed. Even if you were to use encrypted GPS signals, if all comms are jammed, what do you program the plane to do? Obviously you might not want it to self-destruct in mid air or have it come down straight to the ground. After all, some of these units are or will be used in civilian populations. You could make it run in circles, but fuel is limited. You can always auto-fly by compass and head back wherever you came from, I guess. Remote operations will always have that caveat: what's the right thing to do when all else fails.
