In Alpine, Texas. It's at about 4,800 feet in the del Norte Mountains (an offshoot of the Davis Mountains) and is located about 70 miles north of Big Bend National Park. I grew up in San Antonio, but I fell in love with this place in the late 80's. If you've never been out this way, you owe it to yourself to see this part of Texas. It is the best, especially if you're into camping, hiking, mountain biking, etc. The summers are mild and the winters are freakin' cold with enough frost and snow to make you glad you don't live any further north. We have a great bar, the Railroad Blues, that catches most live acts from Austin heading to LA, and most LA bands heading to Austin.
Here's a picture I took a couple of winters back of one of the the mountains that overlooks Alpine, Twin Sisters:

Double post. My bad.
A friend from work has a son who goes there. My kids go to that La Pe e that's right there..
I live somewhere between Dallas and Laredo, therabouts.
Awesome pic, BBBB. I love going out to West Texas/ Big Bend. I'd love to see it now with a lot of grass. I hear that a lot of out of state people are buying up land/buildings in the Alpine/Marfa/Ft. Davis area, though.![]()
I live in the sticks between Floresville (tx3rdcoast's favorite berg) and SA. Hopefully I don't have to keep tlong away from my livestock, but I don't think he digs the WNBA, so the horses should be safe...

Mainly just Marfa, and you know, there's definitely an upside to it. They're really preserving the archtecture, etc. Marfa was a shrinking little town before the artsyfartsy types moved in from Houston. They've also bouyed the Marfa school district by bringing in more property tax revenues. And tourism has really taken off there. They've also fought off Walmart (as has Alpine). So, yeah, Marfa is changing, but it'll never be like Santa Fe. It's too far from civilization.
The other towns aren't changing all that much. There are a lot of Austin/San Antonio ex-pats that have move to Alpine in the last 10-15 years (myself included), and the older generation is dying off, so the population is shifting a bit. The cool thing is that its really easy to move out here and start a business--there are so many niches to be filled.
SW Portland.
Don't tempt me.The cool thing is that its really easy to move out here...
But it would be hard to make it in the cattle business out there without 20,000+ acres.
BBB, that's the kind of place I could definetly call home. I envy you.
In the neverland ranch. btw, i'm a 10 yr old boy.
If I see a pregnant woman walking to a bus stop, I'll be sure to ask if they need a ride. But theres not alot of people that would get into a car with a complete stranger.

Where on the Upper West Side, smeagol? Near Morningside Heights?
I'm shocked by how many people are between Leon Valley and Helotes on or near Bandera Road -- grew up out there when there was almost nothing on Bandera Road past Huebner (on the way out to Helotes) except for the Texas Star Inn, the KKYX radio towers, Braun Station, and French Creek Village. And nothing between Braun Road and the Pizza Hut in Helotes. Ah, the old days. I keep searching for pictures of that area from the mid-to-late 70's; for some who've just recently moved out there, it would be a shocker, I suspect.
