    My statement is not incorrect.
Yes it is. Panting is a sign of being over heated. Dogs don't sweat to cool off, they pant. The tongue is the radiator.

How? I loved them very much. I gave them attention and they were fed everyday.

Putting a dog in the house does not equal optimal care and putting them outside does not equal apathy either.
Troof. I have a Lab/Australian Shepherd cross. She's just too big and active to keep in the house. So she stays outdoors and spends half the day in my ing pool.

    Yeah, she's got it rough.

Again, just because a dog pants, does not mean there is something wrong with it.

When she even thinks about panting, she's in the pool.

It's a control mechanism thing...they don't have to be overheated to pant. They pant to prevent overheating as well.

My uncle is a vet. If they are staying in the sun, he advises against shaving. The coat is a pretty good barrier to radiative heat.

Do you take a shower before bedtime? If not, you're just as dirty.
    I usually do.

And if I don't, i disagree. it's not as dirty. I don't put my nose in other dogs butts, roll around in dirt, and i have underwear that separates my dingleberries from the bed (dog's have dried poop on their back).

    tbh..

A lot of people who own pets shouldn't. That's as true for the people who show them no love and/or leave them outside to fend for themselves as it is for the people who are so loathe to bathe or discipline their animals that they have a filthy house full of pet fur and pee stains.

In reading through this thread, though, I'm somewhat surprised at how many people are so frustrated by the idea of treating one's pet like a member of the family. I can't think of any other reason for owning one that justifies the effort and expense. Treating them like people is silly, of course, but developing an emotional attachment to a living thing who's in your life for ten or so years is hardly worthy of ridicule.

Dogs, cats, and other such pets belong outside. Dogs/cats love the outdoors and stop this BS about panting dogs. They pant because unlike humans they can't sweat. If they're hot, they'll find some shade under a tree or get a sip of water.

So, everyone quit acting like dogs/cats are human (although some behave better than most of you).

I have one dog outside and one inside. My dog outside has a huge privacy fenced yard to run around in and a very large covered deck to lay under. The whole back yard is covered in a tree canopy so it stays tolerable as far as heat goes. The top level of the deck sees over the fence so he stays up there all the time, watching whats going on in the yards next door. I go check on him every day and he seems pretty happy.

My criticisms of people who treat their animals like members of the family wasn't based solely on treating their animals like members of the family. My criticism was aimed at using animals as members of the family to justify the allowance of particular actions by the animal itself. Maybe I didn't make that clear, that's my fault.

    X2

Our heeler is extremely well mannered, knows 10+ voice hand communications, NEVER pees/poops/messes in the house unless she is sick and throws up...our house definitely doesn't smell like dog. Hair is a minor issue because her hair sticks to everything except her but the plusses vastly outweigh the minuses.

you strike me as a cat owner
I've never owned a cat in my life. I wouldn't mind one if I somehow knew it wouldn't be an asshole. Cats are very hit or miss, super friendly or sneaky psychopaths.

Just because a dog pants doesn't mean there's something wrong with it. It's natural for a dog to pant. It's what they do.
It's natural for a human to sweat, but we like to avoid it, right?

A pool changes everything, even though I can't imagine the odor of a dog who spends half their day in water

Hey we needed something to keep the crackers, spooks and taco heads out of our backyard. A big scary pissed off dog that doesn't get any love and affection is the perfect guard dog.

I don't really understand the point of having a dog if you're gonna leave him outside all day, tbh..just don't get a dog if you aren't a dog person, it's a waste of time for you and a burden, tbh..
