he is and he does soem amazing things on that end but right now prime Bowen is probably your GOAT perimeter defender.

1. Kawhi was not guarding Monta for every point he scored.
2. Kawhi can only play defense the way he is told. Started going under screens if Monta hits the shot he hits the shot. Then was told to go over and it's up to the help to contain Monta until Kawhi can recover, but the team defense failed at that.
3. When a guy is getting picked every play you can't judge his individual defense on those plays because those automatically become team defense plays.
All of this.![]()
Amen to that
ANYONE HAVE A STILL PIC OF KAWHI TAKING THE BALL FROM ELLIS?
I'm looking but it's hard sorting through all the pics of Ellis scoring.
Best I could find.
Exactly and San Antonio's interior defense isn't what it used to be. I also don't think it's fair to compare Bowen to Kawhi since Bowen had a younger and more spry Duncan covering his ass. Guards have no fear attacking the Spurs in the paint these days when they know Duncan is slow to rotate effectively. And after Duncan the Spurs really have no threat of a shot blocker whatsoever in the paint.
I always hear people complain that Parker is an ineffective defender, but I think it's dumb because two way point guards aren't a thing in the nba. You got Chris Paul. Who else?
Making matters worse, we already have a defensive specialist at sg! Say goodbye 100pt games.
Maybe soon we'll have a different backcourt but for 2015 we roll with Parker.
Kawhi strugle some against creativeness, finesse type players, that's why that russian guy Shaved also gave him the business...

Lots of national love for him lately.
No one was better on perimeter D than Walt Frazier and Dennis Johnson.
To quote the great robertodiaz...did you have Truth cereal this morning brah?
Nobody criticizes Rique for not being an elite defender, its the fact that he is one of the worst in the league. It'd be nice if he was just average. I'd even take slightly below average from him.
1. Bowen had one of the 5 greatest defensive bigs of the modern era anchoring the team's defense..current Duncan is still a very good defender, but everybody knows he struggles to defend certain types of players nowadays(especially quick guards)
Also, Bowen got torched all the time(in a much inferior era of offensive basketball), every great defender does..
2. There are plenty of good/above average defensive PGs in the NBA, that's such a reach..
i'm on board tbh.. none just strips the ball away from people like that.. of course you adjust to that, but that's like not going to the rim when there's too much rim protection.. i still think he needs danny green on the small fast guys, to be played at full potential, just one of them isn't enough to cover every part of the floor.
I keep reading Danny is better at guarding the quick PGs. Am I the only one that thinks Danny has slower feet than Kawhi? IMO Danny gets matched up with guys like Westbrook/Curry/Irving bc Kawhi is manning the bigger guys like Durant/Thompson/LeBron...not necessarily bc Danny moves his feet better.
Yup so many that you listed a few. I'm joking I know they are there. But spurs aren't getting a new point guard anytime soon. So instead of unrealistic expectations of Tony Parker defense we'll need a team approach like has always been done.
There have been relatively few games where Parkers defense was the sole reason this team loss, but it's always the first to show up (unless Tony struggles offensively, then that's number one)
Yeah I think you are wrong. Danny is better at mirroring guys his size. He also defends the fast break well. He's molasses on offense, but on defense his combination of foot speed and placement.
For kawhi, he's got to bend lower to contest. You can't move side to side without standing straight. Too awkward. So what kawhi can do to sf is different than what he does to pg.
I'm not arguing that green or kawhi are overall better at defending pg and sg, but certain matchup favor green
Transition Danny isn't a thing because he is slow tbh.. Green is flat out the best pg defender in the league, and frankly it's not close. If you ask me a reason, i really don't know, he just does it.
Bruce was a great defensive stopper and was an important role player on le winning Spurs teams. Leonard is developing into a future star and is the future face of the franchise.
You're right, Dude, but you didn't say who was our best perimeter player ever--and no one else has named him in this thread either.
How about a Spur who is the number 1 NBA career in steals per game (2.7)? Number 1 NBA career leader in Steals % (4.1) Defensive Player of the Year. Four time All Star spanning two decades. All NBA Defensive Team 7 years spanning 2 decades.
On top of all this, on a recent NBA-TV show, this Spurs player was named by all the veterans as one of the meanest toughest players they ever saw during their careers--and they meant it as a compliment.
Kwahi made the All-Defensive team once and is leading the league in steals this year with 2.1 per game and a steal % of 3.1. He's a fine young player and will probably improve some more and earn some more honors in his career.
But he has a way to go before matching up as a Spur all time defensive player when compared to ALVIN ROBERTSON

Robertson was an amazing and somehow highly underated defender (although steals are not that relevant when it comes to gauge defensive performances)
Anyway all things considered, Bowen remains in my opinion the best perimeter defender of the Spurs history
