Alot of people do it for cultural reasons in that part of the world, not religious reasons. Especially in the tribal areas where cultural practices are more prevalent than religious practices. Its really as simple as that. Gays weren't well-tolerated in this country for the longest.

Really? Gays have endured violence for the longest time. Executions happened in Europe till the 1800s. Gays are murdered throughout the world not just in the Middle East. Are you asking state sponsored executions or random murders? Or about countries in general banning sexuality all the together? There's plenty of examples of all of the above.
