Santa Monica gave up. Purple Line (soon to be C train/line) is on its way to Westwood, eventually to 4th and Wilshire in downtown SM. The Expo line (soon to be E train/line) goes from DTLA to Culver City right now but starting next year they're opening the second phase, which continues to 4th and Colorado in Santa Monica. Once they finish the regional connector subway tunnel under downtown, there will be a single train line running from Azusa way out in the desert all the way to Santa Monica Pier.
