Nah, he was still making great albums, people just didn't notice until the feud. Nas is like Duncan in the fact that real fans of the game always knew he was better than Jay(kobe). Didnt need a feud to tell them that.
I thought Nas won that battle because he was always the better lyricist. he has a few classics on every album. I am a huge fan think illmatic is one of the 2 or 3 greatest hip-hop works front to back ...but I am sorry Nastradamus was mostly trash. But at least he was still saying something. I love jay too to a lessor extent but his brand rap and money talk got way out of hand and he was also in decline. Yet and still Blueprint and black album were classics ...still they dont touch illmatic. But you cannot argue that Jay had top notch production great guest spots and a few hot lines.

Yea nastradmous sucked, but "it was written" , "illmatic", and "stillmatic are all fantastic. I will agree a lot of his later stuff kinda sucked. Jay definitely did a better job of changing with the times.
agree especially illmatic and stillmatic and I love even a few off "I Am" ... Nas is like was a perfect marriage of Premo's production and Nas's flow. It's funny though you are right Jay adapted his style better but I think Harlem made a great point listen to some of Jay's stuff especially the radio hits so much trendy like "Motorola two way page me" .etc ... NAs of course rapped about tapes on illmatic but at least it was era stuff not hot this year ...and since we talking Nas I also thought Life is Good had at least 3 joints that were high quality along with a solid overall work while I hated Jay's last except maybe two songs. He should of stuck with working with Kanye ...
Blueprint 2 was ok. A lot of it was trendy bull , but there was a few decent songs. Nas had a song with Damian Marley a few years back that was pretty nice. Road too Zion or something like that. Black album wasn't definitely Jays last great album though. Jay will always be the victim of the greatest diss song of all time though.
Blue print 2 and 3 were OK. great production and collabos ... agree Black was Jay's last great album. Like them both but Nas just is more the essence of hip-hop while Jay helped it crossover more mainstream. He was more successful, had a bigger imprint on pop culture but in most of the love of "pure" hip-hop circles, most of the cats I grew up with preferred Nas ...

How's the best way to explain why this is better? I guess the best analogy would be a clean house. Imagine there's a house and there's no one but you in it. But it's just absolutely filthy. Crack den filthy. Dirty old dishes everywhere. Trash over-flowing. Bad smell.
Then you clean the house. Its immaculate - no trash anywhere you look. Dishes all done. Smells like a lavender vanilla candle (the 3-wick kind).
The House is the same House. You're still alone doing the same stuff. But isn't a cleaner house without filth & trash better to live in than a crack den?

Rap is as good as it has ever been, tbh, maybe better..today's mainstream rappers are influencing the youth to aspire for money, partying, fun and expressing their emotions, rather than a bunch of fake ass s pretending to be hard and influencing kids to kill each other, etc
There are ty rappers today like Kendrick Lamar and J Cole that try way too hard without having the content to back it up, but still, most of the other mainstream guys are doing it well, led by Drake..
