What will take for Derrick White to play 35-40 minutes a game like a 24-year-old , most valuable player on the team is supposed to do..

Why is Pop is in' allergic to playing young guys?

Gotta save him for when he's 34 and Pop is still starting him.

He screwed up in '13 and '15. I agree with you on that one. '16 Duncan was washed once the playoffs started. That's what really killed the Spurs chances of winning.
Pop got outcoached in that series cause he had to stick to his stupid rotations just like in this game. He kept playing West/Diaw together and didn't stagger LA/Duncan to have a true Center out there. That was the key to the series. Kind of like last night when he benched White and DeRozan and played a back court of Mills/Belinelli. We've seen this movie before

Great regular season coach, I will give him that..

    Bottom tier playoffs coach..

You could argue that there hasn't been a series this decade that he hadn't had a hand in Spurs losing it or getting extended unnecessarily..

Rocket's '17 WCSF was the only playoffs series Pop managed perfectly..

I remember the one time you said: he always lacked Phil Jackon's ruthlessness and ability to go for the kill..It applies here.

19-point lead over a bunch of upstart pretenders who would probably been swept if he went for his best players for a couple of extra minutes in the third quarter..Now we have a series because of his stubborn overthinking ass..
ing spot on man, Denver already showed they were capable of making big runs (in the same damn game for that matter) and those extra minutes with all the valuable guys on the bench sure helped the spurs "energy levels" in the 4th right? The luxury of pre-set tight minute plans and what not are relics of the big 3 era, at this point what's he saving them for, an early vacation?

Even worst than game 6 of the 2016 western conference semis vs OKC? Wow, that is bad.
Even worst is when he went to the hack a Jordan against the Clippers killing all the momentum the Spurs had in 2015 against the clippers.

That's how a catch-22 works. You're not considered great unless you win and you can't win unless you have great players. Phil had his chance in New York to instill his triangle offense with the Knicks and it backfired immensely. Coach Pop is a master motivator but from an X's and O's standpoint, he's subpar.
At that point, and with those Knicks players triagle offense was like disco music.
    Phil p phlat.

Tbh this is how Pop has always coached. Give the ball to the best player in iso situations. He did it with Duncan, Manu, and Tony. Now he is doing it with DeRozan (over white which I feel is a mistake). Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's a ty 90's strategy which doesn't work anymore. Ask OKC how they're doing with Westbrook pulling the same crap.

Just remembering Fake Tough Guy David West pisses me off. He got absolutely slaughtered by the OKC bigs.

But because he was a veteran who 'sacrificed' to come to the Spurs that meant he was untouchable in Pop's eyes. Pop just fell in love with him like he did with the washed up Finley. West could do no wrong, he was set in stone.

Mills is in the same boat.

That what happened when all those years the pathetic fanbase of the Spurs don't hold him accountable, that what created this full of himself , that losing 20 point lead in a playoff game is a day in his office...

At White, the player with the top net rating on the team and the one who he's said (to paraphrase) allows the team to make sense, averaging only 30 mpg through 2 games. It would probably be slightly higher if not for 1st quarter foul trouble in game 1, but still.

Aldridge and DeRozan can routinely log 36-40 minutes, but a much younger player can't? Especially considering he's the glue that holds this ill-conceived roster together.

Not only should White and DeRozan obviously be staggered from mid 1st/3rd to early 2nd/4th, but when they're in the process of (predictably) squandering the opportunity to inflict irreparable damage on the psyche of a bunch of playoff neophytes, White damn sure can't sit for 6-7 consecutive minutes.

At having Bertans periodically defend Millsap, when it was obvious beforehand that he should never defend him and it's the surest possible source of offense in this series.

Now, having said all that, even if the genius pulls the right strings, I never for a second thought they were going to pull it out. My only thought when it got back to 19 in the 3rd was, how quickly before the lead vanishes? This series is sitting on a platter for these losers, but even though I said beforehand the game 1 winner takes the series, I'm not going to pretend to have an ounce of confidence in them coming through.

Do y'all think the Leonard saga made pop gun shy about young players being ridden so hard? Like maybe White has an overt minutes restriction, or maybe pop is erring on the side of dynamic load management

Meh, Nuggets were getting the same clean looks in the 4th from Mid range & outside as in the previous 7 quarters of the series. They were going to hit just about everything at some point as they were missing those same looks they had all season.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...Pop should have retired when Timmy did. Pop is too damn stubborn and getting senile. Too many good young coaches in the league now and they out coach Pop and too many really good GM's that are a lot better at picking good talent than RC is these days. Booze has taken its toll on certain people!.
