in 2021 your center needs to protect the rim, be a threat on the roll, score on clean up points around the hoop, and rebound the basketball to close possessions
if they do those things very well your team has a good chance to win games.
shooting is great but not at the expense of these things short of a generational talent like Jokic.

Dieng is out tonight (coach's decision), but Vassell (right ankle sprain) has been upgraded from probable to available, per Spurs.

Yeah, this has always been my issue with the portion of ST clamoring for a "SHOOTING BIG!!!" at all costs. Like yeah, shooting's great, spacing's great, but can that big man deter other players from the rim? Rebound and boxout? Be a rim-running threat for our guard-heavy lineups? I've said it a couple times, but the kinds of players who are truly elite centers, AND also can shoot the 3, are only available in the top 2 of any given lottery (see Ayton, KAT even though his defense has been subpar, etc). So it's always been a problem for me of, ok, we get a shooting center, but do we really want that center starting over Jakob? I don't know.
Luckily, we got someone like Dieng, who can really mix it up with his combination of defense and shooting, AND also not demand a starting job. Perfect signing, on paper at least.

he doesnt have to be perfect but he's creative, finding the right look almost every time the ball finds him either for himself or a team mate, and his work on the boards is just ing awesome.
I'd go as far as to say if you watch both ends he's the spurs best player at this moment.
