A group of men with the emperor dominating the proceedings chose a set of books to include as the "official" book and then made copies of it in a different script. So in other words they took other people's writings and doctored them who knows how and then destroyed everything else related to the subject to the best of their abilities.

That is why it is so filled with contradictions. Religious by its very nature leads to sanctimony.
