My Christmas was great: Xbox 360 games, movies, Alcohol, great time with my girls family, great time with my family. Everyone healthy and happy!![]()
A TIVO with a free year of subscription. That started three days of frustration. First I had to remodel the entertainment center and make more holes for wires to pass through. Then I had to figure out to hook it up to my system since none of the 'suggested" installations included it being hooked up with a surround sound A/V receiver. Not that big of a deal, but it just took me a little while to get my mind wrapped around it. Then a trip to Radio Shack for a splitter, cables, etc. Then hook up everything (including stringing a phone line into the next room to a hardwire phone jack)...then...ready to fire that baby up!
Go online to set up the service...go through 4 screens of registration...decide to buy a lifetime subscription for $300 and take a credit for the gift subscription...put in the validation code..and... ...it says the code is not valid...check, double check...I'm holding the certificate in my hand and everything is correct...try again...not valid... !
Call customer service...hold...hold...hold...finally a person...go through the registration process verbally, give them the credit card info etc..give them the gift certificate number...and you guessed it...it wouldn't take the number...she told me it was a glitch in their system and I wasn't the only one with that problem...but she couldn't fix it...it had to go to "corporate" for approval to overide...but I should be able to set it up anyway since it had six days of service programmed into the machine...but I would have to cal back next Wednesday to complete the registration...
OK...I'm cool with that...I'm 4 hours into the installation now but ready to go, right?
Wrong...
OK...go through the zillion setup screens and get everything ready...it then "calls" Tivo to download system info...it finally tells me everything is done and setup and I am ready...
I fire it up and half my channels are gone...including HBO... !
Back to the troubleshooting manual...I go through everything 3 times and nothing helps...
Call the Tivo helpline...go through the automated menu...choose the tech help option...and it gives me a phone number to call...naturally I wasn't expecting this so I was madly scrampling to find a pen and paper to write the number down...fortunately it gave me an option to repeat the message after I found a pen...
call the other number...hold...hold...hold...finally get a very nice person...go through everything I have already done..still no channels...check the software version...ahhh...that could be the problem...it didn't download the latest version of the software...
Manually tell the unit to update...calls in...and twenty minutes later it disconnects before finishing...
manually call in again...go through the process again...and it disconnects again... !
go the troubleshooting section again...change to a different number for it to call...go through the process again...it finally say it has finished the download...check the software version and it still hasn't updated... !...since it "could take up to 12 hours" for the software to download" (supposedly the info just "trickles" in) according to the help line I leave it alone and go to bed...
Next morning I check it...and it still hasn't downloaded the software...manually connected again...the phone disconnects during the download again...do this three or four times till it finall says it's "done"
still hasn't downloaded the software. !
OK...I go back to square 1...I hook the A/V feed directly from the cable box to the TV to check the feed...and ! those channels are still gone even though I still have those channels on the other TV...
Then the light goes on...*bing*...Part of installing the Tivo involves putting in a cable splitter in ahead of the cable box and hooking one coax to the cable box and one to the TV...that way you can record one channel while watching another...
I take the splitter out of the line and hook it directly to the cable box and got all my stations back...it's either a bad splitter or the cable feed isn't strong enough to go through it...
soooo...after ing with it for about 20 hours the Tivo now works but I can't watch another channel while I record. And it STILL hasn't downloaded the software upgrade and I STILL have to call back to get my subscription straightened out...*sigh*
That was a long ass post about TIVO.
Trust me...It was even longer doing it...I was about ready to yank the damn thing out and throw it in the trash.
TIVO has just been scratched off my "things to get" list....
