This is not a surprise. Per 82games.com, the Knicks average more points in the paint thatn the Spurs, Mavs or Pistons. They attempt a lot more FGAs up close. They also lead the league in FTAs. They're trying to play the "right way".
Their downfall is a pathetic defense, and an inconsistent shooting %.
