Guitarists, just like any other musician, cannot be judged to be the best because it is all a matter of opinion and taste.
Chet Atkins, Eddie, Vivan Campbell, Warren DiMartini, Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Vai, Satriani, Santana, Rhoades, Gary Richrath, Frank Marino, Frank Gambale, Neil Schon and the list goes on and on and on.
I never even heard of "dimebag" before he died. I've gone through guitar god cycles from Hendrix to Page to Clapton to Ace to Eddie to Vai and Satch to Campbell to Santana to Vaughn...to each his own.

Chet Atkins was one bad ass guitar player.

I have to second MrChug's plug for Stanley Jordan. Really mind blowing stuff when you think one man is making all those sounds.

Leo Kottke has the same effect with acoustic guitars.

George Benson was incredible if you ever hear any of his pre-pop/smooth stuff.

Les Paul usually played crappy material, but he could do more with two fingers than most could do with five.
