I would not be shocked to read Jordan's name.
I hate to say it, but if Jordan is implicated in this, I think the league dies.

    Authorities concerned for ref's safety

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who's being investigated by the FBI for betting on games he worked, had local lawmen at his Florida home because of two threatening phone calls he received, authorities said Monday.

Three squad cars from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office arrived at Donaghy's home after he received the calls threatening his life Sunday, a sheriff's office report said. They seemed to come from the same unidentified caller.

"There is reason for us to keep an eye on his place and follow up," sheriff's spokesman Randy Warren said.

Authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered thousands of dollars over the past two seasons. Authorities say the referee had a gambling problem and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance.

The New York Daily News reported Sunday, citing unidentified law enforcement sources, that Donaghy will cooperate with authorities and possibly name other officials and players involved in the betting scandal.

On Monday, the newspaper reported that former neighbors of Donaghy's in Pennsylvania say they were approached more than a year ago by a private investigator they believed was hired by the NBA to check into Donaghy's gambling habits.

Kit Antsey, a real estate agent in West Chester, Pa., who helped Donaghy buy a home, told The Daily News a private investigator contacted him 18 months ago and asked him whether Donaghy bet on sports and at an Atlantic City casino.

However, The New York Times reported Monday, citing two unidentified people briefed on the investigation, that the NBA didn't know about Donaghy's betting or whether he affected the outcome of games until after the season.

The Times and The Daily News also reported NBA commissioner David Stern plans to speak publicly about Donaghy this week, maybe as soon as Monday.

Donaghy did not have a listed phone number at his Florida home.

You're right but it was SI's site I got it from. I figured if that was the link that was what I should say.

If no offense meant, none taken!

What about that call when Horry bumped Nash near the scoreres table and he went flopping/flying to the ground? That was pretty questionable because Nash flopped pretty badly and it ejected Horry and cost us the game. We would have been done with that series in 5, if it weren't for that call.

Okay, well, I meant dies as in it becomes akin to the WWE as far as perception and relevance.

The difference between this and the Black Sox scandal is the far reach and quick availability of information, a broader and more vocal public and an already waning credibility in the country's heart for the NBA.

People were in an uproar over Artest and the Palace, Nuggets-Knicks, etc., but unlike the NFL and Pacman, Henry, Johnson, et al., the NBA doesn't seem to be attacking the broader issues fans have with the league's perception.

    No, no offense was meant.

I'm actually awaiting some more input from SI (but admittedly, I'm a little bummed a basketball writer like Kelly Dwyer is no longer with their dot-com). McCallum's one of the only basketball writers there I still like.

The series Spurs vs. Mavs was a rigged one. I am sure he will name the refs of that series. But that is all in the past. I am not like Sun fans crying about it still.

I don't believe players are involved...they make too damn much money to care about point shaving.

We are talking about multiple millionaires here. Nba players that are decent make around 7 million minimum and superstars make over 15. And it can't be scrubs either because they don't get enough playing time to affect the outcome of the game. And if they did get in the game and played like during a meaningful time he would be pulled immediately!

Jordan would never shave points....he was too damn compe ive and too rich. Yes he likes to gamble but not on basketball.

I mean Jordan would try to kill his own teammates if they screwed up!
I thought the same thing--most of the players who could actually affect the outcome of the game make too much money to be bought off. However, if you're talking a scrub who's just trying to affect the O/U, it might be a different story.

let me break 2 things to you.

1)ask a millionare if he's making too much money, he will tell you no. they would not mind extra $
2)a person addicted to gambling would gamble on anything. ppl have said Jordan was addicted to gambling.

The only bad call was the offensive foul on Bowen, which was total bull . It just reaffirms that the Suns spend more time complaining and looking for someone to blame for losing than trying to win.

The only thing better than beating a loser is getting to continually remind them that they are losers.

The fact that Jon Barry thinks it's a foul doesn't make it a foul.
