They're the "defending" champs because they're defending the le they currently hold.

A "defending" heavyweight champion of the world isn't "last year's" champ....he's the guy that currently holds the le and is defending it against another opponent.

Bottom Line: Spurs are the current champions and are defending their le against 29 other teams this year.
