And I love arguing with Spurs fans who equate us with the Hawks and give no respect whatsoever. Never said we couldn't use a back to the basket low-post scorer. Would love to bring in Webber or Juwan if the price is low. I would prefer to wait until next year when our cap situation is better and the FA crop is better to address that weakness.
Of course it's over, and like 29 other teams, the Mavs came up short and have flaws to address.
Find the quote where I said the Mavs don't need points in the paint. While we're picking apart Dallas' weaknesses, what about better perimeter defense? We've been ripped repeatedly by Nash, T-Mac, Wade and Davis. I'd love to bring in a low-post scorer, I'd also like to get a perimeter stopper, which is more important at the moment. As constructed, the Mavs can win a le. I would feel better if we got a Bowen-like stopper (Buckner and George have failed miserably in this role), or a Sean May or Juwan Howard-type to punish up-tempo smallball teams like Golden State or Phoenix, but the Mavs have beaten a championship caliber team and made the Finals. After Golden State, it's a case now of walk before you can run, nobody is going to make the Mavs favorites to win anything next year. But this team is still young, talented and dangerous whether you want to admit it or not.
Where did I say that? Golden State got worse. They dumped Richardson in a salary dump and got a rookie in exchange. Brandon Wright will probably make a good pro one day, but as a rookie, will he equal or surpass what they got from J-Rich last year? I highly doubt it. Houston got better. Phoenix in my opinion took a step backward dumping Kurt Thomas and James Jones. San Antonio stood pat and when you're the champs, you can't really argue with that strategy. Denver stood pat for the most part. Utah didn't do much but they addressed perimeter shooting with Morris Almond. Am I missing anybody? The Mavs stood pat. It's a weak FA class, we're way over the cap, next year the FA crop is better and Finley and Bradley's dead money comes off the books. If next year results in another disappointing playoff finish, then I'd like to see a major shakeup. Dallas stood pat and that's the right move to make for now, aside from bringing in Webber or PJ Brown for the MLE or LLE.
Enlighten me as to this history. Seattle recovered to make a Finals. Like a lot of teams, they were unfortunate to playing the same time as Jordan's Bulls. The Pistons overcame Isiah's bad pass against the Celtics and blowing a 3-2 lead to the Lakers in the 88 Finals. The Bulls themselves came up short so many times against the Pistons. The Spurs overcame .04 and blowing a 2-0 lead. The Rockets had plenty of disappointing playoff finishes before finally breaking through. The Heat had their 05 series against Detroit in their grip and blew it. If we go outside basketball, the St. Louis Cardinals racked up 100-win season after 100-win season and lost in heartbreaking fashion before winning one. Same with the Colts. You don't have a ing clue what is going on inside that lockerroom. Five years from now when the history of this team is written, it may turn out that way. But you don't have any evidence to back that up. So, yes, it is quite re ed on your part to prematurely write off Dallas in this fashion.
Maybe when you're triple-teamed, the right play is to pass? Nobody complained when he found Dampier underneath the basket with three heat players draped all over him to send G5 into overtime. Or what about that tough runner over Shaq to put the Mavs up by one before Bennett Salvatore bailed Wade out? That was clutch and that was "wanting it."
I have a healthy respect for the Suns. They're 7-5 against us with both Nash and Amare so it's not like we're their . I wouldn't call the Spurs our even though we took the last playoff series and have won 8 of the last 12. We can beat the Suns, they can beat us. The Spurs can beat us, we can beat the Spurs. If we apply your logic, then the Spurs have no right to talk about the Mavs, and we both know that's not the case.
