The reason I have a problem with this Red Sox Nation is because nobody gave a about them before 2004 (and by nobody I mean 75% of the "Nation" and the national media). I went to games when the Indians played the Sox in the 95 and 99 playoffs...there was no Red Sox Nation then. I didn't get harrassed by Red Sox fans at Jacobs Field. Frankly nobody cared about them.
Then something happened in the early 2000s, these are the reasons the Red Sox gained their fan base. Henry bought the team and would basically treat them like the Yanks and try to buy championships (so people like that), ESPN latched onto the Yanks/Sox rivalry which didn't exsist outside of Boston/New York before 2002. The Red Sox gained support because people didn't like the Yankees (and still don't), but the reasoning for people not liking the Yanks are what the Red Sox have become. Basically, if you hate the Yankees (which is alot of people) and you don't really care about baseball, your a Red Sox fan.
