As long as Vaughn doesn't shoot anything other than a wide open mid range jumper and facilitates ball movement within the offense he's the ideal backup PG for the Spurs. You can't just look at the player from a stats or one on one matchup perspective, you have to look at what their role is for their team. Vaughn's role is not to put up numbers, his role is to facilitate ball movement with the 2nd unit to set up Manu, Udoka, Barry, etc. On defense he's exactly what Pop wants at the PG position for the 2nd unit. Face it, he's the backup PG for this season and more than likely next as well. Pop loves the guy because he plays his role fairly consistently and doesn't take away touches from the scorers.
Well said! Vaughn understands his role perfectly. Spurs don't need a chucker that doesn't know the difference between a good shot and a bad one. All a chucker will do is take away shots from our big 3 and other high percentage open corner 3's from our wings Udoka/ Bowen/ Finley. I do agree though that Vaughn is sometimes telepathic with his passing and his defense is a tad overrated. All in all for his price and how he understands his role. Vaughn is a bargain. You can't find a better fit for the price. Spurs need a big man in the middle if anything.
