Yeah they were more physical, but I was talking about the lakers being flat offensively, my friend. Missed a lot of easy baskets, look at Gasol numbers. Again out of sync. Next game I expect those shot to go in.

Good game Rockets. I forgot what it looked like to have a good defender stay on the court all game against the Lakers. And two good perimeter defenders against the Lakers? The Spurs would have to go back to Bowen and SJax in 2003

And, WTF, how the did the Rockets get an even whistle in Staples? That's unheard of. Going to Staples, getting Kobe'd by the refs is standard.

    FTL
Pop wouldn't have let Yao go back into the game.
He would rather save him for game 2. And Lakers would have mounted a 10-2 run to prevent the Rockets stealing homecourt.

Is there any way both teams can lose?
Yes, but I prefer the Lakers lose FIRST. As long as Rockets fall short it's fine.

I don't really give a about a Nuggets Rockets series.

Yeah, those missed shots had nothing to do with the rocket defense.

    25-0, after winning game 1

    6-8 after losing game 1

How much do you think that has to do with the fact that defensively Houston has a counter for every L.A. player, except Kobe when he's on fire? Scola and Yao are both horrible matchups for Gasol, he doesn't have the speed to get around them and they have enough height to challenge his shots. Odom can be guarded by Artest or Battier. Bynum is no match for Yao.

Lakers could be in trouble. The Rockets have weapons the Lakers cannot stop on defense, especially if they continue to give the Rockets wide open looks from 3 and neglecting defensive rotation. Their bench still has not clued in to the fact that you have to play defense in the playoffs, and it might be too late for them to pick it up now.

The fact that LA still sucks at D is a serious problem that wont be fixed overnight. Bynum hasnt helped the issue. He is out of position or constantly getting in foul trouble to make any difference. I dont expect his ty inconsistent play to end anytime soon.

Phil Jackson did nothing to attack the weaknesses of HOU.

This is his coaching style. Never reveals his gameplan until later on in the series.

He's done this against SA countless times, most notably in 2004 after Parker torched LAL for 2 straight games he finally made adjustments and forced TP to beat them from outside.

The big question is..do you think he's going to make some adjustments for next game..or will he continue to put Fisher on Brooks...

    Commentary: Where there’s a will, there’s a way
By RICHARD JUSTICE Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle
    May 5, 2009, 2:41AM

LOS ANGELES – No one gave them a chance. Go ahead and admit you didn’t give them one, either.

Only thing is, they believed. They believed and didn’t care if anyone else on earth believed. The Rockets believed they could steal a game here and then take care of business at Toyota Center.

That’s exactly what they did, winning a game with poise and defense and all the things they’ve ridden these last two months.

The Rockets have grown and grown this season, and on Monday night, they grew some more in defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 100-92 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven second-round series at Staples Center.

I'd like to tell you there was a wild locker-room celebration complete with tearful hugs and champagne showers afterwards.

There wasn't. The Rockets accepted Game 1 as a nice moment, but not a shocking one.

"Our first thought was that it’s time to get ready for Game 2," Shane Battier said.

The Rockets believe in themselves. I'm not sure when they started to believe. It probably was sometime after the trading deadline when the roster finally was stabilized.

By the end of the regular season, they were a completely different team than they'd been just a few weeks early. They were built around terrific defense and a tenacious compe ive spirit.

There's also a collective ego. There are individual egos, but there's a collective ego, too.

The Rockets think they're pretty good, and if you don't believe it, that's your problem.

They didn't enter this series thinking they had no chance. They thought their defense would keep them in every game, and if a couple of players stepped up on the offensive end, they would have a chance to win every game.

That's what happened. When the Lakers took a one-point lead with eight minutes left, Ron Artest answered with a huge 3-point play.

That one play seemed to calm the Rockets, and they got big play after big play after that.

"We stayed composed," Artest said. "We didn’t rush."

Yao hit’s a jumper. Brooks hit’s a jumper, then makes an amazing drive to score at the end of the 24-second clock.

"Give our guys credit," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "They came in with the right at ude at the very start of the game."

One of their keys is Artest playing under control. He didn’t do it for the whole night, but he did it enough and finished with 21 points.

"It seemed like every time they made a run, Ron hit a big shot," Aaron Brooks said. Here's the biggest number of the game: 17.

That's how many shots Kobe Bryant missed with Shane Battier chasing him around the arena. The last time the Rockets beat the Lakers, Bryant missed 20 shots.

"Shane did a great job on Kobe," Brooks said. "He made him take some tough shots. He made him work for everything."

Afterwards, Adelman said games like this were won when someone stepped up in the fourth quarter. Yao did that. One moment he’s lying on the floor clutching his right knee. He was helped off the floor to be examined, but then refused to go to the locker room.

He turned to go back to the court and was stopped by trainer Keith Jones.

"Yao," he said, "you have to show me you can walk."

"I’m going back in," Yao said.

"No," Jones told him, "you have to show me you can walk."

Yao had 12 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Artest got the Mohawk he promised his teammates he’d get if they got out of the first round. He even threw in a Rockets logo on the side to make it more special. Special haircuts deserve special nights.

The Rockets had played a game like this one four other times this season. They stayed in it for three quarters, then the Lakers took control in the fourth quarter.

They led by three after one quarter and by three after two quarters and by three after three quarters.

They led by as much as nine in the third quarter only to have the Lakers rush back at the end. Adelman had warned his guys about this exact game. While the Lakers did sweep the regular-season series, the Rockets were in every game.

And in every game, Bryant took off in the fourth quarter, and the Lakers played shutdown defense. That’s how this fourth quarter began as well. Kyle Lowry and Yao turned it over early in the fourth, and when Pau Gasol scored on a lob, the Lakers had a 74-73 lead.

Only this time the Rockets didn’t fold. Maybe this series will end the way the world thinks it’ll end.

"We’re OK," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

The Rockets will remind us all it’s just one game. But it was a game no one expected them to get. It was a huge shot of confidence.

"Our big guys played well and our little guys played well," Kyle Lowry said. "When we’re playing a team game like that, we’re a really good team."

Some have wondered why the Rockets have gotten so little attention despite playing so well.

They’ll get some now. Maybe the angle now is how they’ll deal with success. Pretty sweet, huh?

Big players must play big in big games. On this night, Yao's 28 points were bigger than Kobe's 32 points.

    It’s a blockbuster
Yao shakes off fourth-quarter collision to continue late surge
By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle
    May 5, 2009, 2:31AM

LOS ANGELES – For a few agonizing, heart-stopping moments, Yao Ming rocked back and forth on the floor, grimacing and holding his right knee.

The Rockets had taken the usual Lakers fourth-quarter hit and hit back harder. But then Yao crumbled to the floor, felled when Kobe Bryant’s left knee crashed into Yao’s right. All that the Rockets had built seemed to be crashing with him.

Yao, however, had been knocked down, but not out. He grew stronger, more unstoppable and so did the Rockets, until they surged through the final six minutes to stun the Lakers with a 100-92 win Monday at Staples Center in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals.

"I felt it would be gone quick," Yao said. "It was fine, nothing to worry about. When I get a hit, I knew I could come back. I just felt so sore at the moment. I had that before. I felt I just needed a minute, maybe two minutes so the soreness could go away and I could come back to play. I just felt so bad at that moment. But I knew I was fine."

Just as Yao knew that he would come back, the Rockets seemed certain that they could handle the Lakers down the stretch as they could not during the regular season.

"That’s what scared me when Yao went down," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "But I think our guys are very determined. The way they played in the last series, the way they approached these two days leading up to this game, these guys are going to play. You need people to step up in the last eight minutes of the game, the way Kobe steps up. You need somebody to step up. We had that tonight."

The Rockets led by eight when Yao went down, with Pau Gasol dunking over him to cut the lead to six. Lamar Odom put in a rebound to reduce the lead to four with 3 ½ minutes left. But while the Lakers rallied, Yao made his way back to the bench and then to the court.

When he nailed a jumper from 20 feet, he and the Rockets seemed healed. Ron Artest hit from 16 feet and Yao nailed four consecutive free throws. With a pair of Shane Battier free throws, the Rockets had their largest lead of the night, 95-84, with 1:32 remaining.

They struggled to put the game away, with the Lakers within six with 33.4 seconds remaining. But with that, Yao added two more free throws to finish with 28 points, his postseason high this season, and the Lakers had run out of time.

"We stayed with it," Artest said. "We just continued to play. They pressured us. We tried to run plays all the way through and listen to coach and we were really concerned. We said if anything, we didn’t want to lose our composure and that’s what happened."

That happened in the final minutes, but the tougher test might have been earlier in the fourth quarter when the Lakers had made the same sort of move they used to sweep the season series.

The Rockets had defended Bryant well most of the night.

Bryant, who had missed Saturday’s practice and was called a game-time decision with a sore throat, scored 32 points. But he needed 31 shots and a seven-point run in the final minutes after the Rockets had taken their 11-point lead to do it. The Rockets' defense kept the Lakers to 44.3 percent shooting, including just 2-of-18 shooting from the 3-point arc.

Yet, as well as the Rockets had defended to stay in the game, with eight minutes left, the lead that had reached nine was gone. The Lakers led by one, and the Rockets were facing the demons left from their four season losses to the Lakers.

The Lakers had led those four games by an average of one point after three quarters, and then outscored the Rockets by an average of 12 in those fourth quarters, sweeping the season series between the teams.

"Every game we played against the Lakers this year, we struggled in the fourth quarter to get some things done and we know that is a point of emphasis for us," Artest said. "We understand that’s been a point of strength for them so it’s up to us to be better in the fourth quarter.

"If we do that, we’re going to find ourselves in opportunities where the game is close like tonight. And when you’re on the road and you have a chance to win, it’s a special place to be. So we took full advantage of that opportunity in Game 1."

They did that when, with the game seemingly slipping away, Artest muscled a tough jumper through a Sasha Vujacic foul for a three-point play, starting the Rockets on a late-game offensive surge.

"A big play," Adelman said. "A big-play by Ron. He made a three-point play, hit a jumper and got fouled. From that point on, we were able to get some things happening offensively."

Yao put in a 19-footer. Aaron Brooks, who scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half and provided a jolt of offense when the Lakers made a move in the third quarter, sank a jumper and finished a drive, giving the Rockets an 85-77 lead with 5:19 remaining.

On the next possession, however, Yao crumbled to the floor and the Rockets held their breath, wondering if their chances had broken down, too.

Instead, when he rose, so did they.

Less clear was how high they could climb.

"Honestly, the first thing we said when we came into the locker room was OK, good job guys,’" Shane Battier said. "’Now, let’s get a good Game 2, too."

Not many people can believe the Lakers lost actually.

You really have to wonder just WTF Phil Jackson is doing in motivating and preparing this team for the playoffs. They have no sense of urgency right now and neither does he.

I gotta give props to Yao Artest and Brooks for playing so well. They really wanted to win this game and hopefully they continue to play with that same intensity.

I'm sure the Fakers will be ready for game 2 though...

Please just never post a video of this man again! He rallied against me as I was a major proponent for reform on clutchfans. He may seem like your average middle aged fan but he is something far dirtier than that. Its a travesty he got me banned and thinks he can go around making stupid videos like that.
