Damir Markota
Small Forward (Rank: #44) | 6-11, 240 | Age: 20
Croatia (Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina)
Draft Projection: Second round
Notes: Plays for Cibona in Croatia. Averaged 7.7 ppg and 5.1 rpg in 20 mpg in the Eurolege this season. Markota, who two years ago entered the draft under the name Damir Omerhodzic, didn't impress many teams during workouts in the summer of 2004, and rumors about off-the-court problems hurt his stock to the point that he didn't even consider the 2005 draft. However, after a breakout performance in the European Under 20 Championships in Russia, scouts are starting to take notice again. Markota averaged 18.5 ppg and 11 rpg, was hitting his jumper and was very aggressive on both ends of the floor.
Positives: Markota is a very athletic small forward. Excellent leaper (he owns a 36-inch vertical). A solid shooter. Very aggressive on the offensive end of the floor. He's always looking for his shot. Good rebounder. Has improved his body dramatically over the past two years.
Negatives: Short arms mean that he actually plays smaller than he is. Has had major issues with maturity (he's flaky, a party animal) in the past, though many of those seem to have been solved the past year. Scouts say that he's not a good defender. Still needs to develop a mid-range game.
Summary: If he can prove to scouts that he's matured and that he can hit his shot consistently in the pros, he'll get some serious interest from scouts in the late first round. However, right now he's a solid second rounder.
Scouts Inc. Evaluation: Markota is not a stranger to the draft, having declared in 2004 before pulling his name out. The big question with him is what his NBA skill is. There isn't anything very special about his game. He is limited athletically, especially with his lateral movement. He is a strong, but short-armed, skilled power forward.
Markota is versatile, plays hard and is a very tough kid. He scores most of his points by overpowering post players on the block and is a solid shooter with decent range. His face-up game is decent. Markota is a smart player, good in the low post and versatile enough to be able to use his left and right hand with jump hooks to either shoulder.
However, Markota has several issues that could hinder his draft status. His lack of length (short arms) and inability to defend are on-court issues. He also has had some off-court issues in the past with his maturity and nightlife.
He is a solid player but lacks an outstanding pro skill. He does not appear to have a big NBA upside. Some team could draft him in the second round, hold his rights and see what happens.
he's with the spurs now. Spurs = state farm.
Wow. you guys are fast.
A HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!
I love this team.
A 6-10 who can shoot the three
big and white.
ohh... and a shooter.
Anyone surprised by that pick (or wondering why Markota just happened to be at the Draft) hasn't been paying very close attention.
