Even when we scored a championship on that same year, i have to agree it was the begining of a era of stubborness in general both from the FO and Pop.

And if anything Resigning Bonner was the mistake.

-Bonner resigned for the same ammount Scola signs in Houston.
-Spurs intend to mantain the same roster from 2007 to 2008.
-Spurs fail to get depth at the frontline.

Holt's willingness to pay the tax for a shot at more chips came a bit too late.

Yeah...lets relive this colossal up...I see Pop everytime Scola comes to town, dropping F bombs under his breath, as Scola gathers up another double-double. It still makes me sick to this day.

Absolutely agree. I said it at the time. It didn't kill us by itself, but probably did cost us any chance of repeating in 2008. It left the big guns more out to dry to get worn down; took away who could have been a major player on the bench, and was just a demoralizing Cover Your Ass move.

    It completely sucks.

The Spurs were willing to pay the lux tax for Richard Jefferson, but not Luis Scola, even though Scola was willing to sign a small contract. /theend

    Starters: Scola/Duncan
    Subs: Blair/Splitter

That would have been a more than decent front court for at least the next three years.

The Spurs could have put a mannequin out there in place of Barry in 2005 and 2007 and still won the championship.
    Sacrilege!

People, you do realize that the Bonner signing was what prevented the Spurs from acquiring Scola.

Well, we the Spurs did it again, could we have refused to re-sign Bonner, dumped RJ and acquired Scola this preseason????

I think the reason that the Spurs traded Scola was that they had just drafted Splitter and expected him to come the next Summer ('08).

The Spurs evaluated Splitter as a better front court player than Scola and felt that they could afford to do without either one for one year.

seeing that the rockets aren't anywhere near contender status, it was an okay trade. spurs just happened to lose someone who could have definitely helped.

That doesn´t change the fact that we missed on 3 years of a player cappable of dropping 20 double doubles a season, not to sat the ammount of resting time Duncan lost by not having anyone to supply low post scoring behind him.

I would say that adding Bonner thus, preventing us to sign Scola, thus not having Scola this past 3 years had a lot to do with TD knees not having enought time to recover.

That is nowere an OK deal, when you have thorwn away your best chance to get the best out of your superstar come playoff time.

Of course it wasn't a good decision from a basketball standpoint.

No, we couldn't have. Seriously, how do people spend so much time on this site without learning anything about the salary cap?

As long as we're bumping 4 year-old posts...

I can't believe this. 5 years of anticipation. 5 years of thinking the Spurs made a great second round steal. 5 years of thinking the team pulled a fast one on the rest of the league. Watching this guy light up the world in the 2004 Olympics, and knowing the Spurs had his rights. Watching him destroy Jermaine O'Neal and Elton Brand in the World Championships. Continually hearing we had the best player in Euroleague. 5 years of not being able to contain my excitement at seeing this guy in the black and silver.... all that gone in a second, to save Peter Holt $1.5 million in a season where he had the deepest of deep playoff runs to line his pocket. I'm disgusted. I cannot believe the Spurs gave up a guy who will most likely be a solid rotation player, maybe even a good starter, for nothing. A freaking big man on top of that.... and then another big man on top of that.
This piece of trade took away every ounce of enjoyment I got from the '07 le.

Quietly one of the worst trades in modern NBA history.
