Scouting Report
Player: Damir Markota
Round Selected: 2
Overall Pick: 59
Team: San Antonio Spurs
Strengths: Markota is a perimeter-oriented power forward with a good shooting touch and a decent physical set. He’s very athletic for his size, particularly regarding his footspeed and leaping ability. Offensively, Markota’s only reliable tool is his jumper. His mechanics are somewhat ugly, but he gets good enough elevation to get his shot off even with a defender in his face.
Weaknesses: While his improvement over the past year has been very encouraging, Markota is still a few years away from making any kind of contribution at the NBA level. His wingspan is very poor, appearing to be shorter than his height, which limits his shot-blocking, rebounding and defensive potential tremendously. He also lacks strength. Defensively, he has his moments but all in all will struggle in his first few years in the NBA.
Outlook: Markota will be playing in the Croatian playoffs until deep into June, which hurts his chances of coming to the States to show how much he’s improved since he declared in 2004. He’s a likely second round pick who could very well pull his name out of the draft and try again next year should he not like what he’s hearing. He does not have a buyout clause in his contract.
