Smart man.![]()
C'mon, after Butler donated his time on the Santa Claus charity and other Spurs children charities?!

I guess keeping Bonner has defied logic for so long now that Spurs fans wouldn't be surprised if he *wasn't* cut!!
This logic is also true
Yeah could be Duncan/Ginobilis last year so gotta get every edge you can for any weak link. The nice thing about the current 10 game lead over the 3rd seed is we can see lots of experimenting by Pop with lineups since we probably won't get the 1st seed. That along with the hiring of Kirk they are all in to try to knock the dubs off seeing anything they can exploit.
Kevin Martin should clear waivers tonight around 11 p.m. CST
What time is it there now, I need to know how many hours I hit refresh for and it's only 11am here?
Saying he clears waivers, is he at all still playoff available? Or not?
Yes, because the buyout was completed before the deadline.
Ok, thanks, I hadn't seen any news one way or the other on that.
Yes. The only thing that matters is when the buyout was completed. Anyone that was bought out on March 1st is eligible regardless of when they sign (well, technically not true, I think rosters lock the week playoffs start).
Exactly! LOL.
Like others have said before, to still be playoff eligible, player had to bought out before March 2. After you are bought out/waived, you are placed on the league's waiver wire where teams with priority can claim him. If after 48 hours and no one claims the player (and their salary), they are a free agent.
He was waived around 10:34 p.m. CST on March 1st, so depending on when league approval occurred, tonight around that time he will be a free agent.
Cutting a healthy player like Butler after the deadline and depriving him of a chance to play in the playoffs seems cold. Spurs just assuming Butler couldn't find a job with another playoff contender just doesn't seem Spursian, especially since it would be very unlikely that an injured Red Rocket would be able to find employment.
I agree... but it also doesn't seem likely that you will need him. Think about it. If you have Martin and Anderson behind him... really the time to play even Simmons or Butler in the playoffs is really remote.
One of the reasons I was not in favor of Martin is that Butler has already gelled here, has played a kind of stretch 4 for the most part, and has played solid, no drama in his role either. He has stayed ready and produced. Martin is an unknown since he's had a bad season, he's a gimicky scorer, weak on defense, and gelling is a question with Ginobili as he's reportedly ball dominant. I am not psyched to get him, but whatever its maybe the last season for Timmy and Manu. Simmons/Anderson are young prospects, the only ones we are carrying this season, better than the Daye/Ayers combo we had in the past and they will be needed, if not this season, then the next. The team is old and will need to inject younger players in larger roles. Those two guys are not let go. (+Anderson is guaranteed for about 2 mill next season and has played a lot lately).
Butler and Bonner are basically in the same spot once Martin gets here. The human aspect cannot be ignored. As much as Butler has given, Bonner has been here for years. I am not arguing in favor of Bonner, but its easy for us to say who should get cut and the reality behind the whole thing is different. I didn't even want to let Ray go over Bonner if we are being honest. I thought he did fine enough and RC himself said he still saw development potential in him, the team just wanted to get better for the immediate future and had to let him go. . . should Bonner not have been let go in his stead? yes, but Ray wasn't going to play either and with Martin here, probably Butler would not either. None of them would be difference makers at that point.
I am still doubtful Martin chooses San Antonio. If he's looking for another contract he's maybe hoping to get Marco money after showing up in a highlight playoff game or something... but he's also probably not guaranteed minutes.
The big difference in Ray over Bonner vs Butler over Bonner is that Ray sucked here. I said that before the Miller thing was an issue that I had been very disappointed in Ray as someone that was behind the trade for him. He was bad. Butler has been good.
If it comes down to relationships like you said, then sure, with Ray sucking the relationship won out with Bonner. But Butler is not sucking and I think that is what is valued the most.
I can't believe we would cut a Butler or a Simmons that we can use for an injured Bonner for nostalgia's sake. Matt would still get a ring and would probably log as many playoff minutes, if he is on the roster or cut, zero. Whereas I can see everyone else on the roster getting some run
So whats the deal....Is Martin going to sign with the Spurs or not?
We will know once he clears waivers.
He should clear waivers within the hour. Probably hear something tomorrow morning.
Should've cleared waivers already. Thought this thread would be pretty active right now...
Everyone watching Dubs vs Thunderefs
That's game. lol
