lookn at the box score....
we dont evne have 1 block![]()
Yeah, looks like our D needs the most work for the most part. I don't see a problem in improving that though we have the tools, Pop just needs to use them over some *cough*others* cough.
The Spurs' D was just fine in the first half. The second half they just fell asleep imo.
It has more to do with Scott not being a re with rotations than it does with falling asleep defensively. As soon as the subs utes were in, the Spurs dominated. Scott just kept the starters in longer.
That's true. Either way it says a lot about the quality of the Hornet's bench, no offense.
They aren't great, but Scott did handicap them by not playing Thorton. They will be much better when Diogu and Thorton actually get some minutes.
Game thoughts from TIMVP?
Damn......these guys are good.![]()
Spurs dismantle Hornets in season opener
Tony Parker led a balanced attack with 17 points and dished out six assists before taking a hard fall in the third quarter, as the Spurs opened the season with a 113-96 win over the New Orleans Hornets.
Parker fell hard to the floor after making a layup late in the third quarter, but later came back to the team's bench.
Manu Ginobili, who missed 38 games last season and the entire playoffs because of ankle problems, added 16 points off the bench for the Spurs. Rookie DeJuan Blair, a second-round draft pick, tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Tim Duncan contributed nine points and 12 boards for San Antonio, which has made the playoffs 12 years in a row, but was ousted by the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the first round last season.
"Our defense in the first half was good, very good. Our defense in the second half was very poor," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "I was disappointed in our defense the second half, the amount of points we gave up and the shots they made. We really lost our focus defensively. Fortunately we kept scoring."
Chris Paul registered 26 points and nine assists for the Hornets, who were bounced in five games by the Denver Nuggets in the first round a season ago. Emeka Okafor and David West both scored 18 with Okafor having 10 rebounds and West nine boards in defeat.
Ahead 19-13 after the first quarter, the Spurs shot 63.6 percent (14-of-22) during the pivotal second stanza. Parker's jumper with 6:53 left extended the lead to 36-18.
Antonio McDyess, signed as a free agent in the offseason, hit a layup with a minute left in the half for a 57-37 difference before Julian Wright's bucket capped the quarter for the Hornets.
The double-digit margin remained throughout the second half with the Spurs holding an 88-68 cushion moving to the fourth. But in the third, the game turned ugly. Parker's layup with 2:21 left in the quarter came after he sliced through traffic.
San Antonio's Richard Jefferson and Paul were each hit with technical fouls for arguing with each other.
Game Notes
Jefferson, acquired in a trade from Milwaukee during the offseason, had just five points, five assists and four rebounds on 1-of-7 shooting for the Spurs...Hornets first-round pick Darren Collison had one point in nearly three minutes of court time...The Spurs shot 52.3 percent from the field, compared to 50 percent for the Hornets...San Antonio went 9-of-24 from three- point range...The Hornets have dropped 10 of 11 games at the Spurs.
Looking back at the game, we actually had 2 blocks that should have been recorded..1 was early in the game by Jefferson on a Hornets reverse layup attempt with Duncan on D, and the other was Duncan on Wright off help D..
Don't know if they have been posted but here are a few highlights.

Some better highlights.
Great effort. The only thing that worries me is that Blair was terrible defending the post. The Hornets went at him relentlessly and scored almost at will. He is definitely going to have to improve his post defense.
Apparently he was good in the first half, but I only saw the 2nd half, and it looked as if he wasn't even trying. But Fin and Bonner are living proof you don't have to play good D to get minutes with Pop.
Yeah, who the is keeping score at Spurs games? A Mavs fan?
My mini thoughts, fresh from my mini brain:
- Chris Paul is really good. Too bad the rest of his team couldn't be bothered to get up for the opening game of the season. At least the Lakers had the excuse of the ring ceremony.
- The Spurs may end up with the most wins for a team with no all-stars in NBA history. It's conceivable that they end up with eight guys averaging between ten and twenty points per game.
- I never dared to dream that the Spurs would play team basketball as well as they did this early. The passing was amazingly good and there were very few lapses or bad turnovers. This is an encouraging sign. I'll wait a month or so to worry aloud about whether the Spurs risk stagnating with a big lead in the division.
- There doesn't appear to be a weak individual defender in this group. It'll be really nice to see what they can do when everyone figures the team defense out. There were just enough defensive mistakes that the coaching staff shouldn't have a problem finding stuff to break down in the film room.
- Obviously Pop's been paying attention to who plays well with whom and maximizing the time those groups are on the floor together.
- Was that a fast break I saw? The Spurs could eclipse last year's fast break total by Halloween.
I knew we were going to have better depth...but this was just bananas.
We all look at the health of Ginobili and Duncan as keys to winning a championship, but I think what we saw last night will play an equally important role. Our second unit is going to routinely run other teams second units out of the building. This is going to be a huge advantage for us against the Lakers, as they depend more heavily on their stars because they don't really have a lot of depth.
Dejuan Blair...what else needs to be said? It will take some time for him to become an NBA defensive player, but besides that he left very little doubt in anyone's about whether or not he is ready to contribute right now. If he can bring it like this night in and night out then there is no need to make any more moves on our front line.
The really scary thing is that these guys are just getting to know each other from a playing standpoint. Imagine what it will be like when they are running like a well oiled machine. 113 point........and no one played 30 minutes.
You s got your asses kicked.
LOL @ Paul didn't do anything. He went up for that beyond half court 3 when he knows we're going to foul because of Parker. Lack of courtesy and respect for fellow players = little
Courtesy and respect? The game was still on. It's not Paul's fault Parker fell awkwardly. Not against the rules, so quit your whining.
Holding my opinion until they play a much better defensive and offensive TEAM
True. It's not even an issue of size (like most would have you believe), but an issue of effort. In the first half he made West, and Okafor work for their points, but in the second?....Not so much. Maybe it was the fouls, or he became complacent because of the lead. I'm not sure, but there are things he needs to work on. Blair has the work ethic and the drive, so I'm not worried. Just wait until he learns the nuances of playing defense.![]()
