Some veterans say Trump is politicizing the military by sending troops to the border days before midterm election

retired Marine Col. David Lapan decided he could not stay silent.

“The idea that a group of poor people from Central America,

most of whom are women and children, pose some kind of threat to the national security of the United States is ridiculous,”

Lapan said in an interview.

“It’s a misuse of active duty forces.”
He’s one of a growing number of former senior military officers who say

But Trump has added unusual strain by ordering a military operation whose timing and scale seem unjustified to some officers, and

by suggesting military personnel might use deadly force against unarmed migrants,

instead of remaining in a support role, as required by law.

President Donald Trump apparently doesn’t want US troops to open fire on migrants at the southern border after all.

Trump said in a speech

on Thursday that members of a migrant caravan would be shot if they threw stones at border officials.

By Friday, however, he had changed his tuned, saying that members of the caravan who throw rocks at border officials would be arrested, not shot.

By Friday he had backpedaled, but the damage from his dangerous rhetoric had already been done.

The caravan meanwhile, is weeks, maybe even months, away from reaching the U.S. border.

Why is it - do you think that we never learn?
Are people just choosing to be evil? Is it all just stemming from personal greed? Power at all costs?

It's a natural reaction. Situations like being relatively poor generate the same fear and anxiety/motivation, which oftentimes help people overcome those situations (mid-life crisis, etc) and get over them, or drive them further down.
Politicos long established they can manufacture fear to trigger the same reactions.

But the why, IMO, has everything to do with culture growing up, and you can point to the right and left on this in different ways. Conservatism breeds traditionalism: you don't question why things are the way they are, you might get smacked for that growing up. So you follow the path of the sheep and you do things because "that's how they always been". Liberalism on the contrary often goes into moral relativism, nothing is ever bad/wrong. "You want to be ignorant? that's ok, because you're being who you wanna be". Or parents trying to be buddies instead of parents, supporting bad decisions, just as long as they keep kids comfortable.

In all cases, getting out of your comfort zone is the best way to overcome that. And it's actually a great way to grow both emotionally and psychologically at a personal level.

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA —Backtracking from his earlier suggestion that the military should fire upon migrants if they throw rocks, Donald J. Trump said on Saturday that he was ordering the military to respond to rocks with either paper or scissors.

Speaking at a rally in Pensacola, Florida, Trump said that the

decision about whether to use paper or scissors to retaliate against rocks would ultimately be left up to military commanders at the border.
“If rocks come flying at them, they should go ‘paper, scissors’ until they have an answer,” Trump said.

He issued a stern warning to the migrants approaching the border, telling them,

“The United States military sees your rocks and is raising you paper or scissors.”
At the Pentagon, Defense Secretary James Mattis insisted that

Trump’s latest order was “not a stunt” but refused to answer how the military would come up with fifteen thousand pairs of scissors on such short notice.

FALFURRIAS, Tex. — Gun-carrying civilian groups and border vigilantes have heard a call to arms in President Trump’s warnings about threats to American security posed by caravans of Central American migrants moving through Mexico.

They’re packing coolers and tents, oiling rifles and tuning up aerial drones, with plans to form caravans of their own and trail American troops to the border.

The Texas Minutemen, according to McGauley, have 100 volunteers en route to the Rio Grande who want to help stop the migrants, with more likely on the way.

"You got other militias, and husbands and wives, people coming from Oregon, Indiana. We’ve even got two from Canada.”

Asked whether his group planned to deploy with weapons, McGauley laughed. “This is Texas, man,” he said.
