It's a very interesting question. From what I understand, De-Aaron's defense is likely much better than Trae's, but man, Trae seems to really know how to get his team going on offense and he's a great passer.
or what? You’ll pray we have a losing season next year too?

De'Andre Hunter had one of the strangest box scores I've ever seen last night: 20 points (on 7-14 FG, 4-8 3pt, 2-2 FT), 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks.
The Hawks won by 2 and Hunter played 31 minutes and finished with a +/- of -4.
Yeah, he's a poorman's Cam Johnson.... if that can even be said lol.
there definitely would have been some give and take here
- Trae would have cost us a lot more in draft capital. probably would have cost both 2025 picks, hawks 2027, and then the wolves pick, or something like that
- While Trae does have a solid in-between game, Fox is a way bigger threat driving to the basket
- Fox isnt an all-defense guy, but he does contribute on that end. he's very slim, but he has reasonable length for the position and godo quickness. he did have a really bad blunder this year giving up a 4 point play, so its about keeping his head on straight
on the other hand
- Trae is simply put a much better passer with much better court vision. Fox isn't abysmal, but he's not some maestro. he's comparable to TP. but with this not being a heliocentric offense built around the point guard making everything happen, hopefully this doesnt come back to bite us. i dont think it will be hard for find to Fox wemby, but Trae would probably have helped our shooters and cutters a lot more. He's also an elite lob passer. Fox hasnt been a prolific lob passer but he also hasnt played with a legit lob target
- Trae is a much better shooter and floor spacer, something which has plagued the spurs for a decade now
both guys are good crunchtime bucket getters, and we definitely needed that either way
Wemby isn't an elite lob target tbh. At least not yet. He's not very good at making those reads.
lol nah
I'm happy with Fox but I agree, Trae's shooting and passing abilities are much better and would've been so useful with Wemby. As much as Fox will bring by breaking defenses, the lack of passing abilities of this roster is a massive handicap.
I still don't get why he is so much hated by everyone in the league tbh
If you look at what it would have taken to get Trae. Fox plus ours and AtLs pick this year is probably of more value than Trae.
We definitely would have to return theirs this year with ours to land him.
Trae's playmaking is S tier, but his value drops off significantly when he doesn't have the ball. And Spurs obviously don't want one player to have the ball at all times.
Fox is obviously not on Trae's level passing wise, but he's more than good enough. Don't forget that he played with Sabonis who was the central hub of their offense.
He averaged 7 assists in his last season without Sabonis.
Fox/Castle/Wemby trio has the potential to average 15 to 18 assists, imo. More than enough.
Trae is hated because he plays the villain role and is an inefficent shooter.
I wouldn't want Trae because he's the worst defender in the league out of any all-star while Fox can be a positive on that end.
Don't forget that he played with Sabonis, it's near-impossible to look good on defense without a good rim protector.
Fox can handle the quickest guards, Castle can match up with bigger, methodical threats.
Fox is fine for what the Spurs traded to get him. Trae would have cost all the Atlanta picks back to them.
It's not exactly Wemby's fault right now. The bigger issue is that Chris Paul simply can't beat a man anymore, can't get to the rim at all, which allows the Wemby defender to stick to him, thus few lob opportunities. There will be way more with a penetrating guard like Fox I'd imagine.
I agree
I was talking strictly on basketball skills.
We have so many needs anyway that so many players would be helpful, but Trae's passing abilities are so underrated vs his shooting
Yeah defense is a big issue but I assumed Wemby and Castle could compensate it.
Tbh I haven't paid enough attention to Fox's play making abilities, my attention was so much on his drives and dunks. (watching highlights bc I've rarely watched entire SAC games unless we play them)
Any I'm not complaining ...![]()
Give and take for sure, Trae's court vision and passing are worlds better, much better A/TO every year, better shooter, more efficient on O overall, but I'd take Fox every time for same cost and we got Fox for about as little as possible for a borderline Top 20-25 guy (The Ringer has Fox at 19, Trae at 29, I put both in the 30-20 range).
Trae is almost a full yr younger and will prolly age better (vision/passing vs speed/athleticism), but for the next few years the difference for me is D ceiling. Trae hurts his team on D, often badly. Fox is maybe a slight positive, but he led the league in Steals/game last season. Next to Wemby and Castle (and hopefully a Sochan hitting 33-34% of 3s), we could be a D juggernaut next yr with Fox free to play the passing lanes and that's a big difference for me.
Everyone is going to love Fox after a few games on the court and once they get to know his personality. Extremely likeable guy and he's going to remind everyone of Tony Parker. I think we're also going to see a nice bump in Fox's shooting efficiency.
I'm a Trae fan but even if he cost the same I'd rather have Fox, mostly because of the gulf in defensive ability. Pretty thrilled to have De'Aaron here.
Yeah, I think Tony is a great comp for Fox and its extra special that this is where is wants to be.
Same again, I expect Fox to get much closer to the 36.9% he shot last season vs 32.2% this yr with the Kings and the combine Fox-Wemby gravity hopefully drags almost everyone's 3% up. I'm very hopeful Vassell ends the season above league average, Sochan gets to 33%.
Worth noting, outside those 5 October games where Wemby looked exhausted, he's shooting 37.0% from deep this season- his development is just insane.
Same, and he cost about 90% less prob. Couldn't see us getting Trae back without giving up all 3 atlanta picks back (which are WAY more valuable than the ones we sent), and at least one of vassell keldon or sochan I reckon. But who knows.
Either way I'm stoked for who we got and what we gave up for it, no one in their right mind can claim a realistic Trae deal would've been better.
Yes, I want Atalanta to loose every game for the next 3 years so we can get upgrades at certain positions
Fox is a man of the people
haha that's great. I wonder how many players are actually aware of stuff like this.
I love how in Fox's interview he mentioned Castle and now he mentioned the ATL picks. I imagine him playing Assistant GM while the SAC negotiations were going on. "Yo I'm only extending with San Antonio. And only if they have Castle. And only if they have ATLs picks. I'll retire if you es this up. Go get Lavine and like it"
That really comes off like Fox has been paying attention to us all season, at the least. Love it, can wait for tonight's tip.
"I came here to play with Castle!"
... Starts next to a 40 year old while Castle rots on the bench ...
He'll be missing Mike Brown real soon
