San Antonio Spurs Announce Summer League Roster

I know this because Timothy Varner over at 48 Minutes of told me. Thanks. Check out his post for his take. I'll try not to plagiarize the whole thing. For some reason, his opinion and my opinion are similar. What's that opinion? Clickety, clickety, to find out.

    The "As Expected" Group

    George Hill
    Ian Mahinmi
    DeJuan Blair
    Jack McClinton
    James Gist
The "ATS Had The Inside Scoop" Group

    Eric Dawson
The "ATS Has Got To Be Beside Himself With Joy, I Can't Believe He'll Be Playing" Group

    Nando De Colo
The "He's the Next Best Thing To An Argentine" Group

    Marcus Vinicius
The "It Makes Sense For Them" Group

Malik Hairston - This is his best spot to shine and make a team
Squeaky Johnson - He's Toros veteran. His real name is Carldell. Mrs ATS loves that he's called Squeaky.
The "Guys ATS Will Have To Research Before His Trip" Group

    Donnell Taylor
    Antonio Anderson
    Romel Beck
    Alonzo Gee
    Where the is Marcus Williams?

Here's where Timothy and I see eye to eye. I can't see how he's not playing with the Spurs this summer if they are picking up his contract for next year. He's either going to be cut or traded. I can't see anything else happening. It just doesn't make sense. My antenna are on high alert. Or as my old boss said, "my spidey senses are picking something up".

    I like that roster.

Hill really needs to play to work on his point guard skills and give the Spurs confidence that he can play the position. If he lays an egg, the Spurs will probably go find a cheap third string PG.

Mahinmi and Blair should be a very interesting starting twosome at the PF and C. I think it should be a good mix. Mahinmi is a good scorer and shotblocking, while Blair can rebound. Mahinmi really needs to show something to enter training camp at a high note. If it doesn't look like he has improved, that will probably be the first step to the end of his Spurs days. He needs to play better than he did last time.

How Blair looks will like decide how many bigs the Spurs sign this summer. If Blair looks like a beast and can post a high rebounding rate, the Spurs might pencil him in has a 15-20 minutes per night player. If he doesn't look healthy or he struggles against the bigger compe ion, the Spurs will have to make a point of getting two above average bigs.

I think Gist is mostly a bonus. If he plays really well, that's great and could help him make the team. If he still looks raw, another year in Europe is likely.

I'm glad Hairston is still in the Spurs' plans and will be given a shot to redeem himself after last year's bad summer league showing. He has good defensive potential and plays a very complementary game. I'm also glad Marcus Williams isn't on the team. Williams is a guy who could eat up tons of touches and I'd rather those touches go elsewhere. Without Williams, players like Mahinmi and Gist should get the ball a lot more.

I hope McClinton is used off the bench to see if he can succeed in the role of instant offense.

Antonio Anderson is a player to watch. From Larry Brown:

Anderson averaged 10.2 points a game last season. If he's drafted next week, it's not expected to be until the second round. But Bobcats coach Larry Brown thinks his defensive skills could earn him a spot in the NBA. Brown compared him to Bobcats guard Raja Bell and San Antonio veteran Bruce Bowen.

"He's long, athletic and he's really been well coached,'' Brown said. "The things that John Calipari demands are things that we talk about all the time. I think he could be a lockdown defender and he's a great kid. He's going to get better.''
Compared to Raja Bell and Bruce Bowen? At least deserves a look.

Regarding De Colo, there's no harm in putting him on the summer league roster now even if his situation isn't settled. Teams can change their roster any time. Come the first game, there seems to always be a surprise player on the team and a surprise player not on the team.

This summer league team is going to be the . Gist, Hairston, Mahinmi, Hill, Mclinton, & Blair! Wow! 4-5 of those players could actually be on the Spurs this upcoming season.

I've been told Marcus is under contract but its not guaranteed so he probably isn't making this team.

No Garcia but another brazilian guy, Marcus Vinicius, who played for the Hornets.

He's very bad and also had a terrible at ude with Brazil NT last year when he called out the coach via newspaper.
That's not Spurs material right there...

Possibly all six, though it's likely only three get regular PT for them this year.

I love this roster. They could kill in the SL.

Williams will most likely not make the team, plus his contract isn't fully guaranteed.

I can see Hairston, Gist, Blair, and even McClinton making the team this year, with maybe McClinton assigned to the Toros.

McClinton would need to shoot the lights out to have a chance to stick... I hope he does... that'd mean we are signing 4 of them... Gist, Blair, McClinton and Hairston... :fingers crossed

I see Gist and Hairston competing for 1 roster spot, and a fan meltdown whenever that decision gets made.

Right now they certainly have roster spots available for both. Whether they earn the right to stick with the team is up to them.

Personally, I'd love to see Gist signed to a contract and playing with the Toros. He'd get the chance to learn the system and work on his perimeter game, if the Spurs ultimately view him as a combo forward.

Starters will likely shift from game to game, with the exception of Hill (PG), Mahinmi (C), and probably Blair (PF).

My guess is Hairston gets the start on most nights at either SG or SF, depending on the 5th player.

I would give McClinton a high % chance to sign a contract and make the Regular Season roster. He is 24 and night-in and night-out scored on top-level ACC teams. Did you see him sticking shots in the eye on the Tar Heels? Those were contested shots on the NCAA champs. No hesitation, nor conscience.

Best Spurs summer league team lineup ever.

SL doesn't really translate over to nba anyway. Last year Tolliver shot lights out in SL, then bricked every shot in the nba.

So vice versa, if one of these new players does great in the SL, or poorly, it may not mean anything.
