2010 Tigers season...in a nuts
Where is that, "Wahw, wahw" sound when you need it?
2010 Tigers season...in a nuts
I'm cheering for Miguel to somehow get the triple crown. Always been a fan of the guy and it'd be bad ass if someone got it.
Mediocre team playing in a mediocre division just got knee-capped.
Ordonez: OUT
Guillen: OUT
Inge: OUT
That leaves 4 legitimate hitters in the lineup. Jackson, Damon, Cabrera and Boesch.
Stick a fork in them, theyre done.
And Boesch is crashing down back to earth.
Miguel Cabrera is the only legitimate hitter in the line-up, if you ask me.
Jackson and Damon (at this point in his career) are nice hitters in the line-up if they are like the 4th and 5th best hitters, not the 2nd and 3rd best hitters, especially since neither is a run producer. For all of Inge's faults, he was one of the guys the team relied on as a run producer. You take away three of the top 5 run producers in the line-up, and it spells clear doom. Guillen is the only one expected to not be out for a significant amount of time but even that is uncertain.
I wanted the Tigers to get Haren but probably better that they didn't give up too much for him because with all the injuries the Tigers still wouldn't have enough. I wouldn't mind seeing the Tigers go after Adam Dunn and someone like Ty Wigginton if they can get those guys for cheap since they're both free agents after this season. Any secondary prospects should be available to them (as long as the Tigers keep Porcello, Jacob Turner, and Casey Crosby). Dombrowski also would put Andrew Oliver in that category, but I personally would give him up for Adam Dunn, even though Dunn would be a rental at this point.
Good post.
But even the best case scenario is a Division le. Thats awfully optimistic, too.
What then? Just fodder in the playoffs. I say "sell", but I know that wont happen.
Sell what? The Tigers don't have anything to sell that would bring back anything of great value. The players the Tigers could sell are on the DL. They're not going to sell young kids or prospects who are under contract for reasonable money. Other than Magglio and Guillen, who on the Tigers roster would a contending team want?
Justin Verlander. Sure, but the Tigers aren't selling him.
Miguel Cabrera. Sure, but the Tigers aren't selling him.
Boesch, Austin Jackson, Porcello. Sure, but those are young guys you give up when you are buying, not selling.
Valverde might be the only player on the roster the Tigers could "sell."
For me, as long as they don't give up top prospects, I'd be happy if the Tigers tried to get a couple more bats and make the playoffs to be "playoff fodder." As long as they're not mortgaging the future, I'd be more than happy to see them be "playoff fodder."
Damon and his two year contract for a bag of balls (ie shed payroll, $7 million I think?). get a pick or two, maybe even a prospect.
Guillen isnt going to be on the DL for long. Might be able to flip him for a pick or prospect (shed payroll, $13 million I think?).
Thats two positions empty (DH/LF and 2B). Drop the kids in those positions and let them sink or swim. Figure out what you have, even though its a rookie-heavy lineup as it is.
Just get rid of some of the salary so it can be spent elsewhere. Magglio is now officially off the books for next year (he wont get 500-ish ABs necessary), so there is another $15 million.
If my numbers are right, trading Guillen and Damon, the team sheds $35 million in payroll and really only lose one good player (Magglio).
I would *hope* DD can do something productive with that money. Namely, some starting pitching, even though I hear this offseason isnt heavy with SPs.
I wouldnt. Better to not make the playoffs when you dont have quality SPs. Its no accomplishment to win this pathetic division. Its all relative, but this division is full of suck, no matter who wins. CWS have the best chance in the postseason because of their pitching, but now that Peavy is out, who knows. For me, as long as they don't give up top prospects, I'd be happy if the Tigers tried to get a couple more bats and make the playoffs to be "playoff fodder." As long as they're not mortgaging the future, I'd be more than happy to see them be "playoff fodder."
Johnny Damon signed a one year contract with the Tigers and has a full no-trade clause.
Carlos Guillen has a partial no-trade clause, but honestly, who would want Guillen and his $13 million next year?
The Tigers have already given ample opportunities to the "youngsters." The ones who have shown anything continue to get opportunities. The ones who didn't have sunk.
For me, it's not a big deal to trade any prospect outside of Porcello (if you consider him a prospect still), Ryan Perry, Jacob Turner, and Casey Crosby. Andre Oliver and Charles Furbush should be available. Robbie Weinhardt, Dan Schlereth, and any of the young position player prospects should be trade-bait for the right deal.
Getting to the playoff guarantees ticket sale revenue from 2 home playoff games. That in itself would make me feel good about Ilitch spending that extra few million getting a better player this summer with all that money coming off the payroll anyway. Could be the difference between making legitimate offers at players like say Cliff Lee or Carl Crawford and players like say Rich Harden and Johnny Gomes. Tigers might not land guys like Lee or Crawford, but at least the Tigers could legitimately go after them with big contract offers.
First, I didnt know it was a one year deal with a NTC.
But I believe Damon would waive the NTC if he were to be traded to a contender.
Didnt know he had a partial NTC, either. WTF? Why hand those out like skittles? He is now untradable. DamnitCarlos Guillen has a partial no-trade clause, but honestly, who would want Guillen and his $13 million next year?
Absolutely true. Also osmething I forgot to account for was the way the draft works in the MLB. I was more or less thinking "Screw it, tank the rest of the season." When it really doesnt matter in baseball. The Tigers have already given ample opportunities to the "youngsters." The ones who have shown anything continue to get opportunities. The ones who didn't have sunk.
The best prospects dont get drafted until the late 1st round anyway because their contract demands are outrageous (ie Porcello, Verlander, etc).
So tanking doesnt help anything.
I just dont see the benefit of getting embarassed in the playoffs, ticket revenue or no. None of the premier players in the league are going to sign with the Tigers, none of them.

Shed salary and sign some position players, fill out that lineup, IMO.

Tigers might get no-hit tonight. No hits through 8 innings. Garza is pitching a gem.
Garza was on point and the Tiger line-up is woeful right now. But Garza still had to get out Cabrera and Damon and Austin Jackson, which he did every time.
Props to Garza!
lol Tigers
lol Expos
