That bat could have gone to any other area of the arena or left completely on its own free will. No one forced it to be there. PETA treats animal like they have brains, and if that bat didn't use his brains to avoid Manu...screw that bat!

Bats are scared of people and try to avoid them, what about vampire bats?! Geez...

This is so silly. PETA is such a joke - it's a stupid little bat. I have a real problem with people who put more value on animals than they do humans.
Just swat them out of the way.

Seriously. I guess it takes all kinds. The response was more assinign than the action itself. Ginobili just swatted the bat down. He didn't kill it nor had intention to do so. And what if the bat landed on somebody? I guess to these people it would be OK to have human life in jeapordy more so than this single animal who got released anyway after the incident.
    Hear, hear!
I think it's stupid that Manu's action is "controversial" shows how lame some aspects of our society has gotten.

It's stupid to see some comments that go out of the way to come off as "sensitive"towards the bat's well being. Why? It's just an animal. If you don't want to kill an animal fine, if you incidentally kill the animal without meaning to be needlessly cruel, then who the cares.

Manu shouldn't have to apologize for anything. It's inconsequential, you smash things that go into your home, and this is no different.
It's a ing rodent with wings.

The whining from the PETA re s, and bat apologists over a tiny bat's life, reminds me of a scene in the movie PATTON, where the novice subordinate troops are held up because there's two mules stuck in the road holding up the jeeps and tank infantry and the troops are exposed to enemy fire because they're hitched to a cart blocking a narrow bridge. The troops are so ineffectual in getting the mules to budge, General Patton finally comes up to see what's the hold up, "Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses?
What the 's the matter with you?" , pulls out his gun and shoots the two animals and commands the troops drag the carcasses out of the way, toss them over the cliff, and move on.
Problem solved. That should be everyone's philosophy.

. . .But it's not because in the 21st century, the Animals Rights people would cry foul at that cinematic scene, because some humans are as stupid as they please.
Some people spend too much time worrying about animals' well being over their own species'.

It bit me, as I said it was instinctual. I'm not proud of it, but it was funny.

And my comment about respecting animals was more about the industrialised meat industry, which reduces animals to meat machines. Free-ranging at least gives them some kind of life.

To bludgeon a 4-ounce animal to death, it takes either a small man or a totally unthinking one—with no respect or consideration for lives humbler than his own. This is a time when athletes in particular need to be on their best behavior around any animal and show that they have brains and a heart, not just reactionary brawn.

Bats always try to avoid contact with humans, and there are plenty of easy ways to keep bats out of a basketball arena (or your home). We hope that the next time someone’s life is on the line, Manu Ginobili will take just a few seconds to think before he acts.

this is real? i thought the news about PETA was some kinda joke from someone. Don't get me wrong, i totally respect their advocacy but throughout the years their beliefs had just become perverted and out of hand.

They are freakin' annoying, violent and distasteful! Bludgeon a 4-ounce animal my crap! Manu just stunned the bat, exaggerated morons! The bat was delaying the game, they should be happy Manu swatted it with his soft hand rather than it be hit by the ball or something.

I'd say, PETA should also be sensitive, their killing humans with their stupid comments.

Next thing you know there will be protesters outside the AT&T Center and he'll get the Mike Vick treatment.
If people showed up at the AT&T Center to protest Manu they would be met with violent opposition from some SA cholos. Bring it on.

I understand trying to advocate for animals and wanting to save them but PETA is way to extreme with their views and especially what happened in this case (by the way the bat didn't even die like they said). They're more concerned about the safety of the bat then they would be with Manu or any other person there. Say what they want to say about how bats are so harmless and all this stuff but what if the bat did go bite someone and had rabies? It shouldn't of been there in the first place. By the way they should know that Manu loves animals. These were on his other facebook page .

By the way it's interesting now to hear Manu say on his facebook that it wasn't a good idea and that bats are a good part of our ecosystem .

    Manu Ginobili

Update Bat deal // Actualización tema murciélago
Just wanted to give you guys an update on the bat situation. As many of you already know, it wasn't a great idea. Not only for the fact that bats are great part of the ecosystem, but also, because some carry rabies, which is an incurable disease...

But the bat "lived", right? I am convinced that PETA must have Onion writers on staff, "someone's life". Pffft. Do they hold a wake when they hit a squirrel with their Smart cars?
No, the car needs $3,000 of work and squirrel runs off with his nuts intact.

    It was bound to happen
    By Jeff McDonald

PETA is not happy with Manu Ginobili. Not surprising, considering the group also once protested President Obama swatting a fly.

    http://blog.peta.org/archives/2009/11/manu_ginobili.php

Three points we'd make on Ginobili's behalf:

    1) The bat wasn't going to leave the arena on its own. Somebody had to do something.

    2) In the immediate aftermath of what PETA calls "the bludgeoning," Ginobili seemed generally concerned about the bat's well-being. He didn't mean to kill it (and now it appears he didn't).

    3) Judging by the needle marks in Ginobili's body today, with more to come, it would appear the bat got the last laugh.
