Just interested why you think ts% is better than PPS.
Reason why TS% is better than PPS would be because it calculates missed free throws into its percentages, whereas PPS does not. A real good example would be something like,

    8 of 10 shooting, 2 of 3 three-point shooting, 0 of 10 from the free throw line.

This guy may have scored 18 points, but his free throw percentage make him very inefficient because of his missed free throws. PPS does not reflect that in its calculations, whereas TS% calulates all shots, including free thros, missed or not.

I think the point most of us Hairston honks are trying to make is, he should've been given the opportunity to prove if he was capable of knocking down the three or not; Bogans couldn't knock down a shot to save his life to start, but Pop stuck with him and gave him the rope to find his stroke (it boggles the mind to think such an opportunity was not afforded to a guy like Malik, who happened to outplay him and brings more to the table).
One of my struggles in lobbying for Hairston time is that if you really believe defense is more important, then a case can be made for him over Bogans because he knows the system and has shown the potential to be a better defender. Since the knock on him has been that he can't shoot from the outside, his percentage in D league is relevant, while his shot attempts in largely garbage time in the NBA is not.

That's basically the initial take I gave on their respective defensive games earlier in the thread: Bogans is consistently more solid and has earned the respect of the whistle to a greater degree; he's a proven know-what-you're-getting commodity. Offensively he fits the mold that has become the role of the Spurs stopper on the wing (set up shop behind the line to allow for spacing and finish the play as a spot-up shooter).

So I get why Pop was more comfortable with him and understand why it is they felt his game would bring a better, more seamless fit; plenty of wrong things start out as logical thoughts. Seeing how Malik's shot the ball when he's been given the certainty of knowing that he's not going to get an early hook or be put in cold for a two-minute stretch at an absolutely meaningless time, you can't help but wonder how he'd fare if Pop would've done for him what he did for Bogans: stick with him.

Only, it wouldn't have been, "stick with him", it would've been: Let's see how much of this can carry over into the season (Malik wasn't struggling or in any kind of funk, he was one of their best performers during the offseason).

They knew what they had in Bogans from the jump; they had someone, Malik, who was performing at a higher level and decided to not trust what they'd been seeing or test it to see if they had something better..

How much PT does he need to shoot more than one time? ing Haislip was here for a cup of coffee, played about half of Malik's minutes and took FIVE.

I think Tjastal's wants Pop to play a up and down, fast-breaking style, with lots of dunks and layups. Can't figure out his man crush on Hairston either. Hairston is a solid prospect, but thats it. I'd love for Hairston to develop into a solid role player for the Spurs down the road, but right now, for whatever reason, he hasn't been able to stay on the Spurs roster. I'm strictly guessing, but maybe Hairston doesn't have Pop's system down pact, as far as set offensive plays, defensive assignments/rotations. Plus reguardless of Tjastal's dislike for 3-pointers, that is what the Spurs do. So Tjastal, you should really come out and admit that you hate Pop, Bonner, and 3-pointers. You'll feel better once you get it off your chest.

Again, why does it matter? The team is full of shooters. A player should be able to distinguish himself with the Spurs by playing defense. The shame of it is that he was cut in favor of Anthony Tolliver who did hardly anything other than throw the ball at the rim when it was in his hands.

I know this is going to be a shock for you but..

The statistics say the spurs have not been shooting as many 3's this year. They are currently 16th in the league in 3pt attempts, so it seems shooting 3's isn't all they've been doing. Hope this news doesn't put you into some kind of inert torpidity.

Oh, and I have no hate for 3 point shots.. but I think the spurs have quite enough 3 point shooters as is with Roger, Hill, Jefferson, Ginobili, Bogans, Bonner and Finley who can all shoot it 35%+. If Hairston can learn to shoot em too that's great, but its not an absolute requirement IMO. He should play to his strengths which is making cuts to the basket and moving w/out the ball. Tbh the spurs could really use a guy that does this IMO.. can't have everyone standing around on the perimeter scratching themselves.

As far as Bonner is concerned. Spurs haven't missed his offense much at all since he's been gone (I'd bet they're even scoring more) but they are missing another paint presence. I just think Theo could help right now more with the minutes Matt is getting. Nothing personal there, don't hate the guy, never did.

There, I really do feel better. You should be a therapist

Wow," inert torpidity", somewhere your English/grammar teachers are smiling. But seriously The Spurs can definitely use a athletic wingman who can drive to the hole. Ginoboli, and Jefferson have that talent. Hairston, from the few times I've seen him play, has that ability as well. My question to you TJastal is what do you think is the reason Hairston hasn't become a legetimate player for the Spurs yet?

Just found out something cool that I wouldn't have guesses about Ratliff. +

This guy despite his age is still #4 in the league right now in blocks/minute. Behind Javale McGee, Hasheem Thabeet, and some guy named Paul Davis on the wizards who only played 2 games so he's a statistical aberration.

So effectively Ratliff is third best in the league in shotblocking... and yet never sees the court for the spurs. What do you guys think of a Ratliff / Blair combination? Ratliff has the defensive tools to shore up one of Blair's biggest weaknesses which is his man to man defense. Blair is so bad he even makes Bonner look quick out there, his lateral quickness is slower than a turtle. This is why it makes sense to supplant Bonner with Ratliff in the rotation IMO.

Or do you guys think we should keep faith in Bonner to work his way out of his slump and hope the Blair/Bonner duo can simply outscore opponents?

    Thoughts?

Honestly I have been on the Theo Ratliff bandwagon since the season ever started back in last decade. While some Spurs fans are yelling for an acquisition of some good defensive big, there's one who is right on their squad but has yet to be used rightly.

Well the excuse all year from spurs' fans is that it's because Ratliff is being saved for the playoffs. Which is pretty ing stupid because he's not going to instantly play well on a brand new team after not playing all year long... maybe if he's been with the team 3-4 years already you could think about something like that.. brand new? Harldy.

Look at McDyess, it took that guy half a year to become comfortable in the spurs' system and loosen up his older muscles and joints... I'm sure it would be the pretty much the same for Ratliff who's even older.

Was perusing older posts and here's an Interesting (and funny) one from Aggie_Hoopsfan from back in January.

    "That rotation would be okay.

However, our current C/PF rotation is Duncan, Blair, Jefferson, Mason/Manu.

And when Finley and Bonehead come back it will be Duncan, Bonner, Blair, Finley, Jefferson.

    That ain't gonna cut it."

And it appears he was right on the money with that if the last 2-3 games is an indication of anything.

Apparently Pop has never got an idea about where to situate this veteran shot-blocker on his squad and the only motive or purpose that drove him to sign him last summer was a simple childish compulsion of gripping a bargain. It's totally unknown to us what is happening or has happened behind the locker's door but the fact is crystal clear to us that Theo hasn't earned any decent credit from Pop who is now more comfortable to use the no-D bonner than him and leaves him no bigger role than an assistant defensive trainer or a luggage carrier.

Oh, just a wild guess.. because Popovich is in charge of all coaching/personnel decisions involving the spurs and his decision making would be better served if he sought assistance in the astrological realm.

Pop: (talking to fortune teller): Is Malik Hairston ready to contribute greatly to my team this year?

Fortune teller: (thinks for a minute).. Yes, he is! He is destined to be a contributor in your team.

Pop: But it's Tuesday. The day Michael and I officially tied the knot back in the day. Ahh shoot. Okay, thanks for your help.

Fortune teller: I see a future for you and the one you call "Michael" beyond the basketball realm...

I'd say luggage carrier would be closer to the mark of Theo's role on the team right now.

And if your going to single out Bonner's defense (which is bad) we should really not forget to mention Blair's atrocious defense, which is actually worse in some ways.

Maybe he's not capable of becoming a legitimate player for the Spurs. Why haven't they found out by now? And who has been appreciably better over the past two months that they couldn't have given up minutes to Hairston so the Spurs could evaluate him?

It's troubling that when we ask these questions about both Hairston and Mahinmi that the name "Michael Finley" comes up so frequently.

    PG - Parker(27)/Hill(23)
    SG - Hairston(23)Manu
    SF - RJ (29)/ rotate Mason JR./Finley/Bogans
    PF - Duncan / Blair(20) / Bonner
C - Mahinmi(23)/Rotate Dice/Ratliff keep them fresh for the playoffs.
Were and old team by average, but were even older than average cause the younger players never play. With that Starting Lineup, you have Athleticism (Hairston/RJ/Mahinmi) Youth ( everyone but Duncan is over 30) and floor balance(Parker drives/Hairston drive-shoot/RJ Drive-shoot/Duncan post-shoot/Mahinmi shoot-post a little) and you still have your bench with a nice mix of youth/experience incase Mahinmi/Hairston get off to a rough start in the beggining of the game.

If Mahinmi's still here after the trade deadline, I think he'll get some burn. Right now, the front office is not going to take any chance of messing up his last good impression (NJ game) for potential suitors.

He's long, he's athletic, he's young, so what if he makes rookie mistakes and is foul prone. His presence, just standing near the basket, will be a an improvement to our interior defense.

As far as Ratliff, if the argument is "we're saving him" for the playoffs, well, the way things are going, there might not be anything to save him for.

Ya, that will fix things..Mason at SF should be interesting and seeing Ian get 3 fouls in first 2 minutes of every game would be great. Things are going from bad to worse.
