    What exactly DOES it mean?
First of all, "law of averages" refers to random events. Roulette wheels, dice throws, coin flips. And an NBA shot is not a random event. There is an element of luck (randomness) to any shot but it is mostly skill on both sides, offense and defense.

Second, it's a fallacy to begin with. It's the false belief that "hey I just flipped this quarter five times and it came up heads every time... law of averages says I'm due for tails." Nope. Still exactly 50/50 odds.

Ray Allen shot well tonight because he's a great shooter, not because of some fallacious "law of averages." Lakers have mostly held him in check throughout the series, however, because they play great defense. "Law of averages" has nothing to do it. If somebody wants to talk about "regression to the mean" now that's meaningful.

Here is an interesting fact in this series....

One thing people have yet to point out is Boston didnt blow LA out ONCE in any of their victories. The Celts played out of their minds in game 5 and the best they could get was a 13 point lead which was their largest lead of the series. Lakers had a 20 point lead in game 1, a 17 point lead in game 3, and as much as a 27 point lead tonight.
